Public lands officials in Utah have a bonafide mystery on their hands. Electrical rigs consisting of an antenna, solar panel, and locked battery box keep popping up on mountain peaks and ridges in the foothills around Salt Lake City — and they have no idea why.

Officials say they have spotted about a dozen of the devices scattered in the area. One antenna array was even set up at the summit of Mount Wire, which is more than 7,000 feet high, or 2,130 metres.

“These towers have been bolted into different peaks and summits and ridges around the foothills,” said city trails manager Tyler Fonarow in an interview with local KSLTV. “It started with one or two, and now it might be as much as a dozen.”

Someone in the Twitter feed that was linked in the article you sourced showed Helium hot spots and there are some in those locations. So, yes, likely Helium miners.

I wonder if it's part of a game or challenge like Geocaching, but where people try to triangulate the signal and find the source.

This Helium mining sounds interesting though.

Ham radio does this. I think its called 'fox chasing'.

and operators can have special low-power transmitters.

en.wikipedia.org...

Transmitter hunting (also known as T-hunting, fox hunting, bunny hunting, and bunny chasing), is an activity wherein participants use radio direction finding techniques to locate one or more radio transmitters hidden within a designated search area. This activity is most popular among amateur radio enthusiasts, and one organized sport variation is known as amateur radio direction finding.

I wonder if some could be seismic sensors

It's people that live on the mountains. Not in homes but on the mountain.
Not all homeless people are dumb enough to live on the streets of a city, some just go out into the woods.

I've done this myself. And if solar panels and rechargeable batteries had been a thing I would have used them. You can find a lot of working electronics at the dump these days.

Looked up Helium and they are everywhere. A large string of 6-8 near me. All have the same naming format. Strange.

There's actually a map of Helium coverage so looking at Utah, you can actually see how many masts are in the area.
Since I Iive an ocean away from there, probably some locals can better locate and confirm that those are the same areas as discussed in the article above.

Here's the link to the coverage map:

The names have 3 parts
a descriptive word
A color
A critter

Zany, Lemon, Dragonfly

Best, Coffee, Yeti

Upbeat, Inky, Sheep

Makes sense to someone and no 2 alike so far.
