Oh, child!
"Thiry years ago" was just the 1990's, but the media has had its "special relationship" with the political world for much, much longer than that.
Read up on how FDR essentially hid his paralysis (due to polio) from the public
with the willing cooperation of the press.
And Dole's "gimpy hand", as you call it (rather derisively, I might add) was the result of his heroic service during WWII.
A fact that many (actually, a far greater percentage back then) voters both recognized, and
honored at the time; to the extent that many in the
GOP felt his "war wounds" on display, as it were, would actually resonate with their demographic and
improve his electability.
Clinton, OTH, was the "young upstart" having been "too young" to have achieved the "gravitas" it was commonly believed required of a true presidential
candidate. The gravitas that Dole oozed in abundance as evidenced by often dour expression.
Dole was a Man Who Had
Been There, and Seen That, and could therefore lead Us through anything.
What the old pundits failed to realize was that those 18 year olds who could now vote, who had grown up with the Vietnam War on nightly TV (virtually
inescapable because TV was still mostly limited to network broadcasts), and who learned about WWII in school as "ancient history" (it was, after all
40 some years ago!) (Sound familiar? ), were looking for in a President was someone who was in touch with the times, who could chill.
Clinton, with his big toothy smile, friendly (convenient) southern (but not
too Southern) drawl, and his sax made the whole package.
But, you have bought into one of the greatest tools the marketers have ever devised (well, in truth, they didn't, they just exploit it to the Nth
degree): the firm and unshakable conviction that
"You Are Special"!
You are not like all the other plebs, who think that they, too, are special.....
