What? The whole point about the Hitlergruß (Hitler salute) is that it was used as a sign to show you are with Hitler. That's also why people were forced to do it under the penalty of imprisonment or simply being shot on spot if you did not use it. To enforce group think.

Since these people are not forced, doing the Hitlergruß is openly admitting to being a NAZI all on their own. That's why these people use it. They are not hiding, it's in your face even. Also, the Hitlergruß is done with a straight back and in military back then, was often initiated after the normal salute.

So from flat stretched hand to the side of the head, directly outwards in a energetic, poking motion.

That's the only term I learned in history class for the Hitler-Salute.

Hitler copied that hailing from Mussolini and Mussolini based it on the roman hail (Saluto romano). In 1926 Hitler made it mandatory to use it.

The US used the same hailing to pledge allegiance in schools, it was called the Bellamy Salute. Then the NAZI started using it so it vanished from usage. Nobody obviously felt comfortable using the same hailing as Hitler and Mussolini.

In Austria people used to say "Heil" (hail) and waive their right hand when they met a friend or someone they knew close, had a kinship with. "Heil" means "unhurt" but also "healing" or in substantive form "the concept of healing". But also "heil" means "whole", as in, something is not broken. So it was like saying "Hello my friend, may you be healthy and the "Heil" be with you". Similar to Star Wars "May the force be with you", just in a health context.

In Bavaria, she borders to Austria, the roman "servus" was used to express the above. Ironically, "servus" means "slave" in Latin. But it wasn't understood like that. Servus is used for saying "goodbye" and "hello" at the same time in some parts of Bavaria.

On a sidenote: In other parts of Bavaria you often will hear "pfiat di (Gott)". That means, "you shall be guarded (by God)". The word "pfiat" is a cousin to the word "heil".

The word "Unheil" means the opposite. Something bad, often connected to spiritualism or religion. Then there is the word "Unheilig" what means "unholy".

The holy God = der heilige Gott.
