It depends on what your definition of "great" is and exactly when you thought things were "great".

I thought things were "great" when we were able to put a man on the moon. I thought things were "great" when children graduated public school knowing how their government works and being able to read, write, and perform math with some measure of proficiency. I thought it was "great" when a person could get a job out of high school, work hard and smart, and live a good life within their means. I thought it was "great" when children could play outside in the sunshine without worrying about someone either kidnapping them or trying to sexually molest them.

Are any of those things not "great" to you?

The fact that Trump never really defines these terms is one of the things I find to be most intellectually dishonest about the MAGA movement. By never actually defining what the content of MAGA is supposed to be, it prevents the nation from having an honest debate about it.

That's a complete cop-out. One can insert whatever their own definition of "great" is and debate that. But instead, the entire phrase is twisted into some sort of hate symbol?

As a practical matter--even though he won't explicitly state it--the idea behind MAGA seems to be to drag the nation kicking and screaming back to the 1950s both culturally and geopolitically.

There were some great things about the 1950s. Public schools were producing some of the most intelligent adults on the planet. Family vaiues were not threatened by government. People made a "living wage" as a general rule, even without a college degree. Which of those were not "great"?

That's when white male gentiles occupied essentially every position of importance in the US; all political offices, all financial institutions, all media outlets.

OK, I'll grant that was a problem. But when has anyone wearing a MAGA hat suggested going back to that?

That's when the US was the only major nation to have emerged from WWII stronger than before the War.

You don't consider that "great"? Would you prefer we emerged tattered and bruised? Or maybe you would have preferred Germany to win?

The US economy was far and away the largest and most dominant one on the planet.

Which led to personal incomes skyrocketing. Is that not "great"? Would you prefer we be living in poverty?

Ditto for the US military; we could boss most other nations around and knock over the weaker ones if they didn't do what we wanted.

And that was not "great"? I'll admit we abused that greatness, but the fact we could defend ourselves is far preferable, IMO, to being on the verge of being conquered by other nations. Do you disagree?

The US had the appearance (but not the reality) of not needing anything from any other nation, so America First seemed to be a feasible policy.

Self sufficiency is not "great"? You prefer dependency on other nations?

American industry was booming and every white high school graduate could get a job at the factory and have a reasonably comfortable blue collar life.

Yes, that was "great," except for the "white" part of it. We fixed that. No one wearing a MAGA hat has ever suggested we go back to segregation that I have heard... it has been those with fringe left-wing views that are crying for segregation.

Off-campus UC Berkeley student housing bans white people from common areas. That article is from August 19th of this year.

Women weren't burning their bras yet

Yeah, that part did suck, I guess.

were still shaving their armpit hair

I consider that a good idea.

still needed a husband's permission to have a bank account

And wearing a MAGA hat means one supports that?

abortion was illegal almost everywhere.

Killing children is your idea of "great"?

The few percent of the population who weren't strictly heterosexual mostly tried to hide that fact with varying degrees of success.

And pre-pubescent children weren't being told it was OK to mutilate their bodies.

The part of the population that had too much melanin in their skin still mostly weren't getting real uppity yet and were still being lynched when they were.

That attitude still exists in New England, which is not exactly MAGA country. Lynching is illegal, thankfully.

You just gave a ton of reasons that make no sense, because no one in the MAGA movement has suggested returning to those policies; those opposing MAGA have been doing so though. Others actually acknowledge the greatness that existed in the 1950s. And to top it off, you won't even debate what "great" means, because you, like Potlatch above, are determined to make something mean what you want it to mean and won't even give the benefit of looking at the words used.

Here's one of Trump's accomplishments -- Tax Reform: It permanently slashed the corporate tax rate to 21% from 35% while also providing temporary benefits for individuals and their families.

And the followup:

* Critics argued it was a windfall for massive corporations at the expense of the middle class. Meanwhile, supporters of the tax cuts contended it would unleash an economic bonanza. Businesses would invest in their operations, they said, resulting in improved worker productivity and higher wages.

* Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, among others, said the law would juice the nation's gross domestic product to 3% (or more, as Trump said 6%) and soon pay for itself and spread prosperity.

* But the law has achieved none of the ambitious goals that Republicans put forward — and there are scant signs they ever will.

You are a hypocrite.

You won't discuss Bidens policies because you state it takes 10 years to actually see the actions.

I'm not interested in Biden's polices at this time.

Do I personally have any impact on decisions he makes? NO

He's gonna do what he does.

We'll see where it goes.

Yeah. . . ummm . . no.

You want to play, you get to play.

You don't make the rules up just to support your globalist ideology.

I know, I get it.

You're anti-Making America Great.

You should just embrace your hate and go full Darth Annee.

Biden did.

Trump did not stack the courts.

He placed non-activist judges.

Actual Constitutionalists.

YES, he did. He stacked the courts.

Oh YAY -- Constitutionalists -- my favorite.

Which led to rising wages and the lowest unemployment in memory.

So you prefer poverty and unemployment. Got it.

Or your adoration for anything socialist/globalist?

One World Government much?

It changes ... if you can get enough people to agree with you to amend it.

That's the problem, isn't it? You resent that no one else wants what you do?

Annee has no idea what "stacking the court" is. She thinks it is appointing judges. She told me so a while back in another thread.

Another failed product of our dysfunctional mis-education system on display for all to see.

I was private schooled, so I actually know something about which I speak.

Not saying a public education is or was worthless, it's just you get what you put into it.

Just like the words in "make America great again" have definitions.

I'm old enough to have actually had this class called "Civics." Mean teacher to boot.

I'm too old to have had a class on "Masturbation" though. Somehow we all figured that one out for ourselves. Oh the humanity!
