The Dutch soldiers were in the Indianapolis "Entertainment District" at 3:30 am. Nothing good happens at 3:30 am. They were on their own time, not in training.

I was addressing the title question; "Why were they in America in the first place?"

I believe I've derailed my own thread (though the shooting and potential strangeness regarding the official response was also in OP; was probably what got me questioning the whole thing)

Thanks for posting the link. The following excerpt might help clear some of my confusion (which probably boils down to my dubious choice of a source-the Daily Mail).

Sources indicate that a group of soldiers was returning to the hotel when a confrontation broke out on the sidewalk, which resulted in a local man landing on the ground.

Minutes later, detectives believe a Ford F-150 pickup truck pulled up on Meridian Street outside the hotel and someone in the truck opened fire, sending the wounded soldiers fleeing into the lobby of the Hampton Inn.

Detectives detained, questioned and released two people who they believe accompanied the shooter.

I'm sorry to waste our good membership's time; seems as if there really may be nothing to see here.

In Russia when there was unrest, they would get the troops to suppress it from as far away as possible, simply because it was hard to get a muscovite to shoot their neighbor.

No problem. I like to listen to court cases at work, so I am curious to see how this plays out, especially given the international angle. I appreciate you bringing it to our attention!

Thanks for posting an update; looks like there has been an arrest and a preliminary murder charge was levied.

From the article, an answer to the question posed in the title and OP:

Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren expressed concern Tuesday about gun violence in the United States in the aftermath of the shooting.

“We do many trainings of our servicemen in the United States, and we really don’t expect this to happen. So it’s very, very concerning for us.” Ollongren told The Associated Press at a meeting of European Union defense ministers in Prague

Google "Status of Forces" agreements. Sometimes there are questions about the host country being able to arrest foreign military personnel. They probably had the person detained while those questions were answered resulting in a delay in pressing charges. Of course they also may have had questions on whether there was a need to press charges in the first place.

The real world isn't a television cop show.

In 1986 I did SAR training with the Italian Navy in Sicily. In 1987 the UK Navy did ASW training with us in Jacksonville Florida. Cross training happens all of the time.

.....and that idiot probably got wat he deserved ....

So, someone who you have no idea who he was or what he was doing is an 'idiot'?
And you think he somehow 'deserved' to die without even knowing any of the circumstances surrounding his death?

...made my day when i heard it

Sorry, if that's the case you must have an incredibly sad, pathetic life if the death of someone you know nothing about has died.
Have you nothing else to concern ypurself about?
Is your life so empty that you delight and revel in the death of random strangers?

I'm with you.

I read the response before I'd had my coffee and thought the arrest is what the poster was happy about.

I am not one to celebrate any loss of life.

Everyone has to send their manpower to the States if they use US weapons. Let's face it, that's pretty much everyone, bar China, Russia and their joke countries that are run by them.

I have no idea who the guy is, neither do you.

So why such delight in his death?
Why do you think he 'deserved to die'?

I'm curious as to why Dutch anti-terrorist commanders are training for urban combat in the US?

Pretty typical for countries to cross train with each other, I believe.

Why do some US LE train in Israel??

You should see all the foreign militaries that train at Luke AFB. I have pictures of Australian, Netherlands, Korea, Turkish, Danish, Norwegian, and Italian owned jets flying out of there. By the end of the decade you’ll be able to add Poland, probably Canadian, Switzerland , Germany, and Finland to that.
