No-one to this day has ever come up with anythong like a plausible reason why NASA/Russia/china and almost every other nation on earth would want to fake thses videos.
What's the point?

Perhaps there are things up there they don't want us knowing about.
Look at all the military missions that have gone up that we never hear anything about.
What about that one ship (can't remember what it was called. Maybe the X22) that took off on a 2 or 3 year mission that was top secret. It did return a few years ago, but then went back out for another mission.

The news did a brief report about it, but didn't elaborate what the missions were about. They just said it would be gone for a few years. So my question to that is, how far advanced are we technologically that a manned shipped could be gone into space for that long? And what do you think it might be about?
Anyone remember that?

I'm hoping I'm not the first replier to point out the X22 was unmanned. You have thus characterized your 'remembered' events to be largely imaginary.

There was some guy who worked at a cable or satellite station I believe... He recorded a bunch of VHS tapes of NASA distorting the image or changing the feed when something interesting started to happen, ufo's appearing for instance...

He actually had some pretty interesting stuff and comments...

Secret NASA Tapes or something...

Ah, here it is... My memory was close, it's called "Secret Nasa Transmissions"...

For five years, Martyn Stubbs, a Canadian cable TV station manager, accessed and recorded 2,500 hours of Space Shuttle transmissions. This collection also features interviews with key participants, plus 90 minutes of ‘raw footage’ - including the world-famous STS-75 ‘Tether’ sequence!

Stubbs monitored the public retransmissions of NASA downlink TV from a commercial satellite, then would selectively edit weird-looking sequences into exciting scenarios. Best example: a view of a test tether on STS-75 breaking loose and then, four days later when normal waste water dumps had resumed that routinely created blizzards of ice flakes, he added a view of dots streaming by when the loose tether also again passed the shuttle -- and labeling the sequence UNCUT, tricking thousands of viewers into presuming incorrectly that the 'swarm' dots had shown up soon after the tether break in an intelligent response to it. He steadfastly concealed date/time of the videos he showed so that double-checking investigators wouldn't be able to determine basic context such as sunlight illumination or routine fluid jettisons. He misperceived routine voice transmissions into bizarre secret codes only he could properly interpret -- like when hearing Mission Control say, "we're sending you an orbiter state vector" [a position/time hack for the spaceship] but then claiming the ground said "We're sending you an ORDER to STAY vector", which he claimed was the secret way NASA directed astronauts to ignore the UFOs they were seeing and pretend they weren't there.

Note that Stubbs shows the night time playback but when the astronaut announces intention to switch to daylight playback, which shows exactly what the object was [a deployed science satellite], Stubbs CUTS AWAY to prevent his target audience from seeing what it really was. The astronaut himself explains the video here and debunks Stubbs' deception. www.popularmechanics.com...

more stubbs nonsense...

For the STS-48 zig-zagger, Stubbs claimed: "It goes from "normal" at night, to the 1st. NASA shuttle video to show a UFO! " That was his first and greatest mistake. The scene is NOT at night. The dots appear exactly when nearby stuff becomes visible AT SUNRISE. And since the camera was pointing 'down sun' at the lightning, there is a shadowed zone in front of the camera where drifting stuff becomes sunlit only when they get far enough away from the shuttle. My report has a 3-D representation of where the shadow zone was [it only lasted a few minutes until the shuttle got over sunlit ground, whose reflected sunlight 'filled in' the shadow zone so the camera sensitivity automatically scaled back, making small stuff less observable]. During this brief, rare illumination condition was when almost all of Stubbs's years and years of spectacular 'shuttle UFO videos' were captured. Coincidence? More likely, cause and effect.

Stubbs =IS= accidentally correct by linking the "first NASA video to show UFO" with "thunderstorms are being observed". These kinds of views were part of the just-introduced "Mesoscale Lightning Experiment" [MLE -- google it] directed by Otha Vaughan at NASA-Huntsville, to exploit the just-recently-deployed full-orbit comsat relay coverage enabled by the delivery of three TDRS satellites into 24-hour orbits, to search for sprites and other lightning storm phenomena hard to observe from the ground. Vaughn talked the shuttle program into leaving an external camera on while the crew was sleeping and having Mission Control point it at the horizon to get the lightning storms in profile. The program was a spectacular scientific success... with a totally unexpected secondary UFOric harvest.

there are plat forms like "MISTY" floating around and so who knows what else is up there stealthily flying around the earth

.... how about devoted sharp-eyed amateurs the world over who watch the night skies for anything in orbit, and LOVE to find and report stuff not officially there. You've seen their reports, I presume?

I remember some of these old STS videos that show some interesting stuff. Like this STS-75, where it shows these objects gathering around this tether. I'm not sure what these orbs are, but the fact that they seem interested in this tether is mind blowing. In some ways, I think space is a lot of what it's like in the deep ocean, with all the mysterious sea life and organisms down there. These orbs definitely have a certain amount of intelligence I would say.

You do realize the dot swarm showed up only four days later, after the shuttle resumed normal waste water dumps. I'll bet you think the swarm showed up quickly [and intelligently] to inspect the loose tether. The separate clips were edited together to give you that false impression.

around the :15 mark. I notice a flash on the screen a second before it takes off, followed by whatever is shot at it.

Please catch up. These tales have been thoroughly debunked years and years ago but the UFO hucksters conceal the full explanatory facts to sucker their target audience – shameful exploitation of innocent trust. For a debate with Greer at Purdue in 1999, here's my presentation charts with annotations, let me know what's not clear. In my 20+ years in Mission Control I watched a LOT of weird-looking [but ‘space normal’] scenes on the big screens. I was on console for that STS-48 mission, just a different shift. Later I debated it with a UFO nut on Larry King's show. I’d appreciate any advice on presentation content and style, to improve its readability.

The answer is so far from your conception that if the truth hit you right in the face you could never understand.

Well I have just read Mr Obergs presentation from the link above for the first time and I must say one of the most famous shuttle UFO videos has been totally and utterly debunked, for me anyway.

I agree that a lot of what we see is just debris, or ice, etc. But the orb (or whatever it is) at the :15 mark, seen going towards the surface, then abruptly changes course and with great speed, a second later something is shot at the orb's direction from the surface. (looks like a some kind of a missile to me). How is it that this orb, which appears to be intelligent enough to detect threats, able to do this. The flash on the screen is coming from the shuttle as you have said, but I didn't see anything in that link that described the orb being shot at. Of course the question that comes to my mind is, who is shooting at this thing and why? There's no way that orb is just debris imo. These orbs seem to like storm activity too, as I've seen several videos of them gathering in and around them for whatever reason.

The camera is pointed at the thunderstorm because that's the purpose of this activity, to opportunistically spot high-altitude lightning phenomena. It's called the Mesoscale Lightning Experiment [MLE], run by Skeet Vaughan at the NASA-Huntsville center. These are the kinds of event context features that the internet UFO blogs keep their target audience ignorant of, for their own reasons.

The Shuttle had 30+ reaction control thrusters that helped keep it in the proper orbital position and orientation. Some of these would fire automatically and for short bursts of thrust -- invisible thrusts due to the type of propellant used. It's very possible for a piece of ice or other debris to be in the path (or move into the path) of one of these thrusts and get quickly flung away.

a second later something is shot at the orb's direction from the surface. (looks like a some kind of a missile to me).

That could have been another piece of debris, just being flung at a different apparent angle relative to the camera. Also, if that were a missile from the surface and far away from the camera, it would have been faster than anything we have or could possibly dream up.

I understand the idea of a super-fast missile isn't a showstopper (i.e., people can just claim the missile uses secret ultra-advanced propulsion technology), but that starts going into the realm of wild speculation -- when a more plausible, mundane, and not-uncommon explanation already exists.
