Didn't say it was but it is a temp where carless accidents can cause big problems , Perhaps some were set deliberately.
Having been out in it all day I can say 38 is a crazy temp for a Brit.

Some people's garden thermometers were apparently reading over 53.5 so a lot hotter than that - probably south facing well sheltered spots I would hazard a guess though as that is unmerciful of true, thankfully for me we are not in the worst hit area but even here in Lancashire it has been very hot although only in the thirty's I believe.

I wonder if they were electrical fires with perhaps many electrical fans or AC units going.

"Be aware of where light from windows reaches, be careful of shaving/vanity mirrors, glass ornaments or paperweights that may be exposed to direct light. Do not leave mirrors or glass ornaments on window sills.
There are a number of incidents across the news that show fires caused by direct sunlight refracting through glass. This is a risk all year round, not just in the summer."

The window sizes are also an interesting tidbit of info. Perhaps dust storms in Arizona? I don't know.
