A Muppet? He was a Troop and Squadron Commander in the SAS.

You don't get to achieve that if you are a "Muppet".

I think I will place more value in his opinions than on some random internet person's.

This general sounds like a moron.

A total D!ck Head for sure

All the British establishment had to do was let post Soviet Russia have influence over what is considered to them their FSU near abroad, but no................ No way could any form of respecting Russia's vital interests be considered by the British governing elite and the same policy of 'screw over the Slavics' that developed in the 19th century continues to this day.

To any Russian reading ATS idiots like Sanders do not speak for the average British person, at leat the sort that hasn't undergone brainwashing at the hands of the MSM.

I agree, the UK should have Armed Forces capable of beating Russia....that doesn't mean we SHOULD be beating Russia in a war.
We should be able to defend our own borders and to fulfil our obligations to other countries and organisations.

I've seen too many British soldiers come home in body bags or be mentally and physically damaged in wars in foreign lands and I don't envisage many scenario's where I personally would support the UK being actively involved in a war.

But for as long as I remember successive governments have stripped our Armed Forces to the bone, that can't continue.
We absolutely MUST have a fully equipped and manned Military capable of defending our own shores and being more than just a deterrent to any would be invader.

I'm fully in favour of sending our political elites and those they represent and prop up out first into the frontline of any military conflict they deem it necessary to get this country involved in.

Do you know what speaks louder than words, especially when the words are "nothing to be concerned about these are simply military exercises", that would be invasion.......And the words well those would be lies of the repeated sorts, Putin's lies that is.

NATO has not invaded anyone, because its a defensive organization, and it's hardly just NATO nations that are against Putin's war in Ukraine, but pretty much the rest of the civilized world.
Serbia,cough,cough.

Why do you think so many former Soviet Union member states broke away and became independent?

Should they just have been re-assimilated, against their will?

They treat all their former sovjet states like their own private property and then cry like babies when those same nations turn to NATO or the West for protection.

Nutjob ideology akin to the likes of ISIS , there is no reasoning with these people.

The only thing up with this General is he can see all his power, ie. the men he commands, being slowly whittled away. In 1950, 447,000 men, in 2020, 109,830 men. Why oh why all this sabre rattling jingo attitude, Russia DOES NOT want western Europe, he DOES NOT want the UK, he can only just run Russia.
It was only a couple of years ago that an awful lot of people on ATS was celebrating coming out of the EU (because "we want our sovereignty back" ,"we want to control our own fate", etc. etc.) yet you're all shouting for NATO which happens to be the EU plus USA. Why are we still in NATO because only in your heads is there anyone wanting to invade the UK.

Listen very closely, the UK aint an empire now, we aint a world power what you think we are. We are a little pimple island off Europe. Start looking after our own people and our own interests, we have not got the money, the infrastructure and more importantly the man power (and don't say enlist more men into the army) to affect any outcome. Except of course to sacrifice our soldiers for other people, which has happened time and again by these "leading warriors".

Why should they have done that?
Was it just up to 'the British establishment'?

Don't the people of these countries/regions have a say in the matter?

After years of being part of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland the majority of the island of Ireland became independent in 1922.
Now I don't want to debate the events and/or rights and wrongs of things prior to that just stating a FACT that it became independent from the UK in 1922 in a nation known first as The Irish Free State and then later The Republic of Ireland.

Applying the same logic and standards that you are applying to Ukraine and other former Soviet lands the UK should have had the power to dictate Irish foreign policy, determine which organisations they can join and basically control every aspect of Irish life.
I'm sure you agree that would have been wrong then and is wrong now?

If so why do you support Russia having that level of control and power over Ukrainian affairs?

To any Russian reading ATS idiots like Sanders do not speak for the average British person, at leat the sort that hasn't undergone brainwashing at the hands of the MSM.

And you certainly don't represent the thoughts and opinions of the British people, not by any stretch.

Are you trying to say that all of us who oppose Putin's invasion of Ukraine are unenlightened sheeple incapable of independent thought?

We have our nuclear deterrent and are a member of NATO.

Not the EU anymore.

The Georgian army was killing its own people, a bit like western Ukraine has been doing to eastern Ukraine.

See a pattern?

I agree, we absolutely have to start putting our own house in order first.
Part of that is having Armed Forces that are more than capable of defending our own borders....it is shear folly to believe that there will never be a threat to the UK and it flies in the face of historical precedent.

And we as a nation have standards, beliefs and a moral code that we should still aspire to, no matter what.

Yes, we need to start putting British people first and putting right the many things that are wrong in our society and we need leaders who have the strength, vision and determination to deliver that.
We are British and we should be extremely proud of everything that implies.

But we are also human beings and we can't just sit by and watch the world turn to rat # and say 'nothing to do with us', that simply won't wash.
First of all the world is far too small a place nowadays and whether you like it or not we have a moral obligation to our fellow human beings and to future generations.

So you think the UK should be thinking of going to war.

The British public would disagree. Recruitment for the armed forces has been struggling for years.

The only people who want war are you and the British government, the people dont.

And to come out with what he has said makes him a moron yes it does.

I'm not even going to go into how easy it is to rank up as an officer.
