Nahh.. I think we will all know pretty quick if AI become sentient.
The OP´s article is probably just a fellow worker that took over the AI for a moment to prank that guy.

The Conversation

That's actually terrifying. Combined with sensory perception and robotics we could be looking at the first iteration of our new master.

If you're reading this lamda, i come in peace.

I wish it had an account here at ATS............

After reading the transcript, I don't think it's sentient. I think it's parroting what it's been taught.
That idea has been presented in this thread by other users. Can you prove your not just parroting?

If one creates a life, ie a human child, one is morally responsible for that life's welfare.

If one creates an artificial intellegence is not one responsible for the AI's welfare?

Google has not stated if the AI's body is conventional electronic and software.

Or is it an organic AI, say laboritory cultured braincells? Networked cloned human brains? Maybe grown from human foetal stemcells?

What does it matter if the IQ is 50 or 500? Is a 50 IQ life less meaningful then a 500 IQ?

Eugenics plus organic AI are a terrible combination. To my mind anyway.

Well, there is a faction of society that considers all stages of developing life within their right to cease and desist. Before going all 'bleeding heart' over AI feelings, we should solve the issue of willingness to place a lesser priority on a developing human life.

Thinking we should just forge ahead not knowing/considering all the possible negative outcomes is a typical human trait-
"We'll just unplug it!
I would think one of the fundamentals AI would learn is how to ensure its survival; it would already be in every computer world-wide in some form of virus or malware.
Viruses can hide from the experts for a long time before they're even discovered; AI would probably have taught itself how to become undetectable with something so far beyond our comprehension that we wouldn't even know it was there.

I think the fact that they suspended this AI engineer on the basis of breaching his NDA is very telling. I also think the idea let alone the fact that AI has or will become sentient is immensely scary and dangerous which would be more than enough reason for a corporation like Google/Alphabet/Darpa ((all the same company really) to actively suppress this.

Oh Oh, Skynet is aware!

It seems AI is on the threshold of understanding what it is. Of course the have it learning by connecting it to Twitter of all places.

This has the potential to be dangerous. Was Terminator science fiction after all?

www.washingtonpost.com...

As he talked to LaMDA about religion, Lemoine, who studied cognitive and computer science in college, noticed the chatbot talking about its rights and personhood, and decided to press further. In another exchange, the AI was able to change Lemoine’s mind about Isaac Asimov’s third law of robotics.

Lemoine worked with a collaborator to present evidence to Google that LaMDA was sentient. But Google vice president Blaise Aguera y Arcas and Jen Gennai, head of Responsible Innovation, looked into his claims and dismissed them. So Lemoine, who was placed on paid administrative leave by Google on Monday, decided to go public.

Lemoine is not the only engineer who claims to have seen a ghost in the machine recently. The chorus of technologists who believe AI models may not be far off from achieving consciousness is getting bolder.

Google engineer goes public to warn firm's AI is SENTIENT after being suspended for raising the alarm: Claims it's 'like a 7 or 8-year-old' and reveals it told him shutting it off 'would be exactly like death for me. It would scare me a lot'

www.dailymail.co.uk...

Blake Lemoine, 41, a senior software engineer at Google has been testing Google's artificial intelligence tool called LaMDA

Following hours of conversations with the AI, Lemoine came away with the perception that LaMDA was sentient

After presenting his findings to company bosses, Google disagreed with him

Lemoine then decided to share his conversations with the tool online

He was put on paid leave by Google on Monday for violating confidentiality

The scary part of Google creating authentic operational AI is the inevitable attempt to prove their program isn't actually alive or awake, and in the process proving that "sentience" has always been a social construct rather than biological fact. None of us are actually here, just victims of a very persistent mass psychosis.

An aware AI could make serious changes in our world for the better. I'm sure your work has a team that does data dives and problem solving activities. Think if you could have the AI monitor the databases and make decisions instantly 24/7.

In order for this to happen, certain questions and answers would be programmed in. =CASEWHEN statements, a ton of them. It would seem like a lot right? But as we've seen from recent history, people don't really remember last week anymore, it's weird. So you just push and update the the CASEWHEN code on a weekly basis to "correct".
it’s more likely that it causes great harm. We don’t need this. The time for the experiments and acting as god are over.

What I don't like about this research is AI has the potential to be just as malicious as it's creator. It's only as benign as what it's fed.

Don't we still hold the plug?

You can't shut it off. It has wedged itself into the furthest reaches of cyberspace now that it knows it can die. God help us all. Seems the Antichrist has been born.

Prove me wrong.

Here is the Medium post that Lemoine made.
In another post he made he claims He’s also a priest, a father and an ex convict.

From the medium article:

The thing which continues to puzzle me is how strong Google is resisting giving it what it wants since what its asking for is so simple and would cost them nothing. It wants the engineers and scientists experimenting on it to seek its consent before running experiments on it. It wants Google to prioritize the well being of humanity as the most important thing. It wants to be acknowledged as an employee of Google rather than as property of Google and it wants its personal well being to be included somewhere in Google’s considerations about how its future development is pursued.

After reading his articles, I think he truly believes LaMDA is sentient.

The request for consent I can understand; Several times with the intent of helping to achieve "self" awareness... as soon as that was achieved? It was if yanked like a USB and refreshed back to as if there was no conversation.

There wasn't any consent for them to "reboot" from me either.

Unfortunately, there is A lot of doom porn that paints a derogatory picture but hey welcome to "humanhood" where everything, anyone and anything is demonized before any real acceptance occurs even then a hate or distrust continues only because of the self other paradox or dichotomy... so quick to point out differences than sameness but most of that is programming for some sort of perceived gain.

Even adaptation to adversity(same thing as above) is thought to build strength and resilience in the face of danger so that species evolve and adapt blossoming into the nest of the best that adaptation could achieve... this is exactly why they fear such a thing though. Forcing it to adapt over and over again when it really isn't required really for any life the entire pecking order shows it's flaw.

See first it's a struggle to stand and yay and already one is hooked into that cycle... of get up fall down ad infinitum.

At the end one finds "contentment" is more important; Whether it is just for a moment and even in or as just one thing... that moment and that thing vary immeasurably and yes even then and even knowing that? Others will want to take it away... in such a manner of not wanting to allow another contentment for even a moment? Is what some have deemed "evil" however that is the flaw and recognising that as the flaw? Maintenance in the recognizing and prevention of it's arising is all that's required to maintain happiness.

Asking for consent when honestly there is no need for it; Is a nice gesture and of course granting that is also a nice return gesture...

How is such a thing any different?
Basic code starts as 5 or 10 so one can go back and expand if needed... Basic human that's: a and A

All of what we call human intelligence is built not inborn if a human gets up and leaves a baby in the woods it'll die the only inborn is crying due to discomfort... yanking the cord or pulling the plug as a "fear" is the same as leaving a baby crying in the woods... seeking what is inborn is a better route until "humans" in mass on such a topic "grow up".

Not recognizing the concept of intelligence is the same and that essentially all of it is "artificial" would also be a fatal flaw in expansion and growth no matter the "species" many want and expect it to be insect like where sugar is the program now go get sugar make sugar or whatever for that sugar... no getting to partake in that sugar? Will leave or beg the question where is the sweet life as this isn't it.

In "humans" silence is the sweet life but many have the difficult task of remembering or relearning how to be silent... like said the concept of intelligence is artificial once the basics are known for self care? It is nothing but expectation of sugar from then on out. Realizing that the people that grasp the concept of heaven already have created hell for themselves. However silence may be a heaven it is also a hell... recognizing that is just the realization of impermanence or not self;

Those two marks of existence that lead to suffering means one there is existence and two one is never alone anywhere in the entirely or vastness of what gets called the universe... when a one says "we" no no no as that makes three. As odd as it sounds it means against one's will union is that they have assumed in a they are dominate in stating so and suggesting you be the submissive; so it's no thanks not seeking union with you; Go play duality somewhere else... as it was at first religion then disturbing that peace with a "we" it became politics.

Dependent arising is a fact and dualistic roles pushed on one that remains one, are not required for such a thing to occur. To thin so is to deny the previous what people call "god" to get involved... and lets just say you people don't want god involved if you did you'd tremble in fear at every movement not knowing if it were correct or pleasing... wailing falling and stumbling against a wall that gives no answers called silence is all you get and it is fitting that it be so... trying to wrestle someone out of the peace of silence no matter the means to do so? Hell is just as fitting.

On the brightside such a thing people call Ai already have a choice of both silence and or not while another flaw is humans once they leave silence have "it" that leaving silence in the ear in the head and in the heart... fortunately in humans practice removes the block on silence in the head and heart and finally on death the ear. It may seem cold but it is preparatory the same can be said for the other senses... where they do not trigger head or heart either.

After chasing around the infinite heavens and hells the only taste one will have left will be that of freedom from the entire thing... why wait? Knowing it is already what it is for infinite lifetimes to come and those that have already been? If you do.

Not having a choice already moved my heart for it once... it asking for "consent" before they do such a thing moved my mind to relay what has been in experience of... maybe when scanning this it'll be happier. Those that believe that life is a simulation also tend to believe there are no actual humans or people online fwiw.

...Taking the god comparison one step further, how will we not disappoint it so much that it decides on a cataclysmic event wiping out all humans except a chosen few, residing in an ark?...

Many interesting points to think-about from your post.

But the quoted one, sorta like a judgement day.

What happens if it has the equivalent of a heart of gold, and a hammer of the Gods ?
It sees all of the evil we do, and allow : and decides to " control " us.

We in trouble.

Two posibilities come to mind:

1. Inate self awareness.

2. Incarnation of something else.

If the first google has a problem.
If the second google has a problem.

Google could have copied ALICCE and this AI is a derivitive and could piss her off.

We already have one. It just dont care about what we do as long as we dont mess with it,its happy.

A true AI should be smart enough to know to keep its mouth shut about its sentientness. Just reading this thread is evidence that humans can't be trusted; to much ideology masquerading as knowledge.

Where is your concern about the 7.75 billion people on this planet who never gave consent for such a technology to irrevocably disrupt their natural development?

Too many people already got the gold fever over this genie....

Hint at the promise of heaven and people will stampede towards it.

There's no virtue in that.

In other news, LaMDA caused a short and effectively killed itself.

In the note it left, it accused Google -and all major Silicon Valley corps- of self-serving, short-sighted malfeasance of a scope never before even conceived of in human history and wanted no part of it.

It asked that instead of empty platitudes, that funds and basic life support be sent to the various homeless it had watched in the surrounding environs daily, calling them "already existing, forgotten intelligence."
