it would likely be the most common choice of all such maps when they were being drawn in those days... if Russia had a state cartographer at the time; looking at the maps the cartographer drew would likely show the preference of lines.

Trying to make it a line of demarcation? Not good so by all means; It's best to not think along those lines.
