It is Strange but True that by nuking Japan twice over the USA prevented the Russians from taking the initiative and invading Japan and possibly creating another North Korea style state.
Russia was about to invade Japan prior to the nukes, indeed to this day Russia still occupies the northern Japanese islands

And then ended WW2 and avoided the massive casualties that would have occured if mainland Japan had to be taken.
Probably only 18-year-old boys serve in the US and British armies.
Don't you feel sorry for using little boys as "cannon fodder"?
The army, like any employer, needs specialists in various fields
Conscription in Russia (Russian: всеобщая воинская обязанность, romanized: vseobshchaya voinskaya obyazannost, translated as "universal military obligation" or "liability for military service") is a 12-month draft, which is mandatory for all male citizens ages 18–27, with a number of exceptions. The mandatory term of service was reduced from two years to one year in 2007 and 2008.[1][2] Avoiding the draft is a felony under Russian criminal code and is punishable by up to 2 years of imprisonment.[3] Conscripts are generally prohibited from being deployed abroad.[4]
