President Biden says if China invades Taiwan - He Will Send the U.S. Military to Drive China Out.

President Biden is in Japan for a couple of days. He just finished a meeting with the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida.

Biden emerged from the meeting to say the United State military will come to the aid of Taiwan, if China invades.

Biden: US would respond militarily if China invades Taiwan, says 'that's the commitment we made,' reports AP.

Why such a provocative statement? Is it possible that U.S. Intelligence is telling Biden that China is planning to invade Taiwan, like Russia invaded Ukraine?

Would we be able to drive China out of Taiwan? Should we?

I really hope that does not go down ! Long supply lines for the USA and with all the political stuff going on in both countries I could see how a war could be on the agenda. Even without going nuclear it will be a blood bath for all parties concerned IMO.

The Taliban and Russia's success are cause for China's Xi to be optimistic that NOW is the time for him to make his move(s).

Believe it or not, the New York Times is so alarmed over how frail Joe Biden is, they wrote an expose about his leadership style that meshes with that example you gave.

While I certainly don’t admire or condone authoritarian China and support the right of Taiwan to be a democratically self-governed sovereign nation - what would there be to gain from this?

Then there’s the logistics as 727Sky has alluded to. With the proximity of Taiwan to the Chinese mainland they have a supreme advantage in terms of supply lines, controlling the air, the sea, land based missile launches and the rest.

When China bloodies Americas nose there they will be further emboldened to ratchet up the pressure on Australia. Oh, and as of recently they have a new extension of the existing arrangement in the Solomon Islands....roughly 2000km’s from our coastline where they promised they absolutely, totally, definitely won’t build any military or naval bases.

There is a big difference between invading Ukraine and Taiwan. However impotent Joe is, you can bet China will think twice before invading Taiwan, because the price is going to be astronomically higher than invading Ukraine.

I'm not saying it can't happen, but that's a true SHTF scenario.

I am against war at all costs, those who die in a war are the poor folk, the wealthy are the one's pointing to the next hill those boys have to take. It's idiotic and there are no winners, only death.

But, we made a promise to Taiwan, much like we did to Ukraine. We aren't living up to our promise to Ukraine, but if we walk out of Taiwan too, we will look like the Afghanistan withdraw was our best moment of the 21st century.

While I miss the mean tweets, I also miss the way Trump was able to avoid war. Cry buckets and make up idiotic reasons why that's not the case, but everyone knows it is. I have to go explore my white rage now, so y'all just kill each others as you see fit.

Their mobilization sweep definitely is. But as CWM astutely pondered, is Taiwan our responsibility and to what extent?

I seem to recall a recent president that tried to get companies to return to the US so we would not have these kinds of problems.

That is not the move of someone who plans to go to war with a nation when with Russia the first move was economic.

That is not the move of a political party whose former President said in public that he wished the US government were more like the Chinese government.

It is a cover and deflection and the Chinese know it.

Unless, the Chinese feel the need to get rid of excess bachelors they created through the one child policy. At the same time the US elite political class in power may want to continue its drive toward depopulation and consolidation of totalitarian rule over what they consider the ignorant masses. Then it may be a mutually planned "war" to help the elite political ruling class of both countries achieve their aims.

An excess of bachelors can destabilize a country and the Chinese know it. COVID didn't depopulate as quickly or create the permanent acceptance of totalitarian rule hoped for by the elite political ruling class in the USA.

Both may think that a war will be beneficial to their respective elite political class' in the long run. War between 2 nuclear powers can mean instant depopulation of targeted specific populations with minimal damage if they coordinate where the damage is done.

The brilliance of it is that each side can blame the other in public and the elite ruling class can sit fat and happy, making themselves into heroes, as they rule over the remaining ignorant peon masses with totalitarian ruthlessness.

I wonder if it will be a "clap, you stupid bastards" kind of response. Joe's in China's pocket and fully compromised so I'd expect a significant hit to our own military when this goes down.

Anyway per BBC News, diplomacy seems to be holding for now, with China's foreign ministry spokesman saying "We once again urge the US to abide by the One China principle". (Not a great response but China could have taken things a lot worse.)

A little info about TSMC chip foundry in Taiwan:

It is the world's most valuable semiconductor company,[5] the world's largest dedicated independent (pure-play) semiconductor foundry,[6] and one of Taiwan's largest companies,[7][8] with its headquarters and main operations located in the Hsinchu Science Park in Hsinchu. It is majority owned by foreign investors.[9]

TSMC alone controls over 50% of the global semiconductor market share.

So when China overruns Taiwan (or even if they don't end up taking control but the island is ravaged by fighting), get ready to wait a lot lot longer for that new F-150 that's been delayed due to chip shortages, as in, when Hell freezes over.

The consequences of China taking over (or taking down) Taiwan would be devastating to the tech industry, and as chips/semiconductors have become integral parts of everything from PCs to refrigerators to trucks to doorbells, it's really hard to understate the impact that could have. Without knowing how long (or if) other chip foundries could be setup to take up slack from TSMC, we could be without replacement parts and equipment for making new "stuff" for years.

How the U.S. can let this status quo go on, with the world's leading chip manufacturer sitting a short boat ride from mainland China, is a testament to idiocy, greed and willful ignorance of those running the U.S..

Some senators/politicians have surely been paid off to look the other way on the Taiwain issue, and strategically planning to endure a loss of Taiwan chip mfg capacity.

Some senators/politicians are simply that stupid (or in many cases too old/senile) to understand the significance of what's at stake.

Some senators/politicians are so naive and gullible to believe that nobody would ever shatter the global supply chain by moving on Taiwan.

So the U.S. cannot afford to lose the tech manufacturing that Taiwan supplies. The best move would be to setup our own TSMC inside CONNUS, but again, that's too easy and too clever, which is why those friendly to China or those too stupid/trusting to understand what's at risk, are in power right now.
