Hey all!

My GoPro Hero 7 finally died. It survived hundreds of flights and several hard crashes. It was time. This video is the first published with my new Hero 8. I haven't dialed in all the settings yet. For instance the shutter isn't locked on this flight, so the first min or so you'll notice its a bit dark transitioning from light to dark. But the 2nd half of the video, the clouds actually cleared and its much better. (I was actually looking for an excuse to make a flight video to this song. I actually like it a lot)

I hope you enjoy the flight.

I will watch it later on a big screen, but I have no doubt it will be amazing like the rest of your videos.

What I like most in all of them is and always look out for are these moments where you use the momentum of the drone to dash through tight places like you lost control and recover "tricked ya". It has something very beautiful to it and tells me you are one with your done in these moments.

Awesome to hear! Thank you for sharing that. The heavier drones, like the one I'm flying in this video. I like to use their momentum to "toss" them. A guided throw so to say, then slowly come back on throttle to guide it into my next line.

This video is exported at 1440p 60FPS. Should look good on a big screen.

Nice! we have a Matrice as well at work. We have 2 camera attachments for it. One can do Lidar and Thermal, the other is optical and is really good at rendering 3D landscapes. We use it for land surveys.

That's an $$$ drone. We paid over 30k for the drone and the Lidar/Thermal cam.

The one we had at the company I worked as a data analyst for was an octocopter with a thermal camera plus HD camera recording additional footage, both on gimbals and IDK about the one used to control it, never saw that footage but it came with a headset for FPV.

It cost 17k€ and needed a pilot license and permits for flights. We used it do fly over and around PV power plants to check on the panels and get a thermal reading to spot damaged cells.

Ah I forgot the coolest thing it had a green laser that was used to mark the panels and the technicians could just follow the laser beam and knew the exact panel, because these things are not visible with the naked eye.

Ours has the laser as well. All our of pilots are 107 certified. They use the laser to mark elevations and distances. We are supposed to start doing more land surveys soon. Just waiting for the weather to be a little bit warmer here in the North East.

Yeah dude! Over 50k for us - in CAD $

I have the L1 and the H20T.

Im trying to buy the DJI P1 right now, but having a hell of a time trying to find one.
Apparently DJI has them on backorder due to the semiconductor chip shortage.

Any leads on one?

Thanks Albert! I've been flying FPV drones since 2017.

I heard May, we should start seeing more stock from items that were affected by the chip shortage. I'm hoping to see prices drop as well. That on top of inflation, things been crazy lately!

it's very inspirational. I just got one of these small acro indoor drones, a beginner complete FPV set. Lots of fun, but also lots of crashes. Good thing it's kind of made to crash... I honed some rough skills indoors, but it feels too small of a space. Last week I went out for the first time, doing the stuff I learned indoors with more momentum, It feels so much better. I'm still very scared to lose it in a tree or a roof, I start panicking when I get too close to either. This weekend I managed my first power loop over a construction beam, that was fun.
I guess the bigger the drone, the more control and less edgy they are?

What did you start with, like your very first flying RC???

The bigger they are, the less they are blown around by wind. The bigger motors give them more authority to hold their own. But you run a bigger risk of breaking stuff the heavier the build is.

When I got into the hobby, tiny whoops and micros did not exist. My first real drone was the Wizard X220. 5" props. To get used to flying with goggles, I would just keep it in horizon mode and cruise above the tree tops. Then once I was comfortable, I put it into Acro and never looked back.

I also practiced on simulators before hand. That was a HUGE help. Before my first real full acro flight with my first drone. I probably logged a good 30 - 40 hours on the sim. I feel like that helped a lot.

Damn, I heard that a lot about simulators, sound like I will have to seriously upgrade my Laptop if I ever want to run any decent sim.

I'm still on horizon mode, I think. I have 3 modes, one does not allow flips and loops, one does but will bring the drone back to horizon when I leave the sticks, and one is giving me a hard time still, I guess it is true acro mode. The problem is that the pitch and roll sensor moves back to the center, while the drone stays at the angle.

I might want to snap out of that half assed acro mode and get these rolls and loops done without the horizon cheat.

That's acro mode (manual mode)! Drone stays where you put it, unless you apply counter stick movement. With those little guys. Many will keep them in horizon mode when flying inside. Then acro mode when they are outside.

With the bigger builds 3" - 5" props. Many just have them in acro mode 24/7. Like myself. I would practice acro mode as much as you can. Eventually its the only mode you'll fly in!

So I just flew my only battery so far twice today in acro mode inside... Damn the crashes were hefty...
it is no fun. Pitch and roll gives too much speed for my little flat. I have to get my FPV feel honed, I've done most flying so far by line of sight.

I will stick to this drone for now but the way this is going I will probably get bored by next year...

My first real drone

Did you had any RC flying experience prior starting with drones.

Nice, how long would you say it would take to be a fairly competent flyer? Those inverted loops look naughty lol

I found one and bought it.
$9835.00
Candrone in Vancouver had one

Are you using Terra for your LiDAR processing?
And are you also using Terra for converting R-Jepgs to .tiff for thermal?

I raced RC cars when I was younger. Those crazy fast ones that you had to put the goop on the tires to help them stick to the track. This was a LONG time ago. It was all about gear ratios. But aside from that. It was all new to me in 2017. I went to school for electronics and have been working in the IT field now for 22 years. This hobby actually synergizes with my career path.
