I was in Dachau too, it's something many schools do with 8-10 classes. The fire bombings of Dresden, I am only typing this to you because the train
where my grandmother on the father side of the family was sitting in as a baby, got stopped because of track damage in the middle of the night.
A few hours later the Dresden fire bombings happened. If that train would have arrived, full of women and children, most would be dead and me not
existing. They came from the Warszawa by train, civilians, some even victims. I was born in former DDR in Dresden, but my parents fled before the wall
came down with me as a toddler, only two years old. I always refer to being Bavarian because I grew up here and my family is from the region
originally though.
Any educated person should not be afraid of discussing the good and the bad of history, unfortunately the state of education in many parts of the
world is a mess, forced ignorance never leads to good things in my opinion.
It's really not about that. You can bet on most Germans being extensive schooled on WW2, especially my generation X and Y. It's just not something
most have energy talking about. It's history, none of us were there, it has to be remembered but understand we have better things to do and on our
minds. For a foreigner it might be an interesting topic, WW2, because you are here and want to know our history. That's applaudable. But frankly, many
Germans are fed up with it.
It's been 70+ years. The topic is dead for Germans, we are overstimulated. And then a foreigner approaches and asks questions, it's really like "Is
that all we are for you?". The German culture isn't understood in the rest of the world either.
Many stereotypes are correct but only a few understand why many Germans are like that. Germans are not really obedient. We are overall, disciplined
and hard working, precise and tidy. This leads to a mindset that prefers rules, because that's how things run best. And naturally you adhere to these
rules. That's IMHO the reason why so many German ancestors did great things in the world.
We just should watch better WHO makes the rules. We are so used to trusting the state but the times for trust are long over.
