If it's a show of status, people will do things that are hard. But that doesn't automatically mean that they did so.
Part of status in an ancient society is connecting it to your ancestors. We're to believe the Egyptians built these large pyramids in one
generation. No succeeding generation adding to them. No previous generation beginning them.
But that would mean the pharaoh isn't saying anything cool about his ancestors. No dynasty. No pedigree. Just Cheops himself, building a vanity
monument to himself by himself.
It's not just the technology that isn't adding up here. Some of it just plain doesn't make sense anthropologically.
