DNA tests have been used in Israel to verify a person’s Jewishness. This brings a bigger question: what does it mean to be genetically Jewish? And can you prove religious identity scientifically?

You have a wrong point. Christians were not allowed to marry jews ( not because of racial view ), Catholic church forbid cos Christ was murdered by the jews.

How do you come to that conclusion. Judaism is a religion, anyone can convert to Judaism but just because you've changed religion does not mean you change your racial identity. And just because you've changed to Judaism does not make you a Jew. As the Jewish people are a race.

The problem is made worse by the Jews that call their religion Judaism. Technically Judaism has it's roots with the tribe of Judah so that then would be racial.
But it's quite simple (and it goes for Islam as well) anyone can convert to Judaism and Islam but you can't convert to be a Jew or Arab, which are races.

I''m not trying to come off wrong but even my Jewish friends can't even give me a direct answer

I'm genuinely surprised at that because its Judaism 101.
If your mum is Jewish, you're Jewish regardless of whether you are observant.
It's the basis of Israeli Right to Return.
Conversion is another way in but that's a tiny minority of Jews, and if a convert marries a Jew and has a child it's not an issue.
Ah, you say, that's all ideas and not science. Read the question: are Jews a race?
Like sex, ethnicity is scientific. Like gender, race is social.

But But the word "Racist" has a more powerful impact than words like "Prejudice", "Bigoted", etc. 😎

Mitochondrial DNA is scientific to a point. It helps to predict certain outcomes under largely theoretical circumstances. It doesn't identify one class of citizen vs another or what the inherent abilities and contribution of that specific patient are likely to be.

So you're talking about population genetics, which doesn't quantify people as being categorically "Jewish" or whatever. You have a certain amount of geographically significant markers in your DNA which says that someone from a particular nation contributed their genes to yours. That's not a membership card. Nor does it make you especially qualified to participate in their culture.
I often question the local community about their ethnic influences (if they try to brag about such background) and how much they have studied the language or dabbled in the customs of the region. Spoilers: not at all.
