A submarine anywhere from any nation can be a nightmare. They don't need to be close as missiles are capable of reaching any target from wherever they maybe.

A submarine in close to shore is more likely to be engaged in communications intercept. Our navy host a number of subs and other fleets in that area.

The best place to find a sub with a sub would be to start where they leave a port. Track one leaving before they go deep and silent, you stand a much better chance of sticking close in shadows as you play a game of hide and seek

All conjecture really. The Russian Federation boast about their new stealth fighter of which only one exist...not exactly a production model either and would still be a few years away from any sort of robust program.

Hypersonic is a little misleading in and of itself, as to be hypersonic the speed achieved must exceed about 3700 mph, and components be able to withstand it.

The US has had hypersonic aircraft and missiles on the drawing board since the 50's. The truth is, both nations and others already have hypersonic capability as spacecraft leaving and returning to earth exceed 17-thousand mph, and for many years the components in space programs do withstand the elements.

The US is said to have 7 different hypersonic programs active. Active is a long way from a reliable system but it stands to reason there are working systems not yet in production like the Russian stealth bomber.

The XR-37B program is one I have always thought is closely related to hypersonic sonic programs. The US programs seem to take an approach toward hypersonic missiles that glide at hypersonic speed from extreme altitudes such as space. The XR-37b program is eerily associated with space based missile technology.

It can remain in space for monstrous amounts of time, completely autonomous and return on schedule all the while exceeding hypersonic speed and surviving to return in a relatively short turn around. While the US may not be advertising capabilities on earth, our program in space could have spurred both China and Russia toward an earthly deployment missile in the more traditional form.

The bottom line is pretty simple...both nations have enough traditional arsenals quite capable of destroying each other and everyone else on earth several times over without hypersonic technologies. It's never mattered whose **** is bigger...only who is stupid enough to push the button first.
