The murder of David Amess has now been confirmed as a terrorist incident.

A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder, and he is in custody at an Essex police station.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said the early investigation revealed "a potential motivation linked to Islamist extremism".

Officers are currently carrying out searches at two addresses in the London area, the Met said.

Do you think this could spur some kind of change in direction or is the government just as intent on pursuing such policies regardless?

I'd like to think it would but I doubt it , this particular government have shown no signs of stemming the flow and I can't see that changing.

Off topic, I know but:
I have to say that what Boris Johnson and the conservatives sold themselves on doesn't seem to be what they are delivering.

It's political double action.

I was under the impression that this is part of the reason for Brexit and yet this crap continues.

Sadly they're keen on stopping Eastern Europeans who want to work from coming in in favour of Africans and Asians who don't want to work , Johnson's government have shown themselves to be inept in many policy areas with immigration being a particular area of ineptitude.

The sooner Johnson is removed the better in my book.

'Muhammad' is the UK's most popular name for third consecutive year. ... Muhammad has become the most popular baby name in the UK according to the popular website for baby names and parenting, BabyCenter. The ranking tells the name Muhammad has sustained its top spot on the list for the third consecutive year.

In 2017, Muhammad replaced William in the top 10 most popular boys’ names in England and Wales. The research concluded that name has risen 35 places in the last decade and was at the eighth spot in 2017, with just taking two more years to become the most popular name in the UK.

Our system needs complete change.
Both parties have been infiltrated by globalists.
Tony Blair turned the Labour party into tory lite and sold out to the banks and the EU. David Cameron continued his policies as the two sides seemed to gradually merge.

There are fringe elements within the parties which give the appearance of difference but they are mainly theatre to distract and keep the tribalists happy believing they still support the "right" side because they always vote that way.

Boris saw a chance to win power for his ego by getting Brexit done and he did but left many feeling betrayed.

What makes it even more senseless is Amess was one of 10 MPs who voted to have Blair impeached in 2004 so he could face war crimes prosecutions over lying about Iraq WMDs.

Hopefully this won't change how surgeries are conducted as they're a vital part of democracy. So far MPs and the Speaker seem united in refusing to stop them seeing their constituents today or allowing this to damage democracy or the ability of constituents to have full access to their MP and the Parliamentary process.

It wouldn't be a private, confidential or welcoming atmosphere if there were security or police present at surgeries and people use them when they're at they or their loved ones are most vulnerable and in need.

The Father of the House seems to have put it best:

“There is no perfect security for anybody. My view has always been that in many other walks of life you are at far greater risk than a Member of Parliament.

“MPs may get exceptional publicity. We are not exceptional people. We’re ordinary people trying to do an ordinary job as well as we can. We accept the risks.

“The question is – should MPs stop meeting their constituents face-to-face? The answer is we will go on meeting our constituents face-to-face.”

check out the rest of his voting record. Stop cherry-picking the ones he developed a #ing conscience. He's a typicl tory #.
David Amess voting record.

Pretty cut and a dried there. Agree with your first post - a typical Tory scumbag. 'Sir' my ass.

Consistently voted for lower taxes for the rich (on income over 150k, capital gains tax, mansion tax, banker's bonus tax).

Less benefits for the poor (43 votes for, 0 against). Reduce benefits for those with long term illness or disability (13 votes for, 0 against). Reduce housing benefit aka the 'bedroom tax', which I seem to remember resulted in a woman inadvertently killing herself shortly thereafter, so kind of blood on his hands for that (14 votes for, 0 against).

Easy to do when you've had your head in the trough for nearly 40 years.

Oh, and he hated gays too..

Amess was one of the hundreds of MP's who voted in favour of invading Iraq. talk about hypocrasy.

Constituency surgery is something that is lost in translation form English to English. My first thought was a medical procedure in a church.

A lot of people are taking politics way too seriously and some to the extream measures.

I clicked on this thread for exactly this reason! What the heck is a "Constituency Surgery"?????

Apparently you can meet your politicians one on one and they call it ‘surgery’ for some reason. And I thought “bang tidy” was a funny term.

Which he openly regretted.
He said that was the spur for him to vote against military intervention in Syria etc.

With regards to Iraq; MP's could only vote on the information presented to them.
Now as The House of Commons was deliberately misled over WMD's it was hardly surprising so many of them voted to go to war with Saddam Hussein - who lets not forget was a callous despot who thought nothing of gassing and torturing his own people whom he had a long history of brutally repressing.
Amess later voted to impeach Blair for his duplicity unlike the vast majority of other MP's at the time.

As usual you don't give the whole picture and are incredibly selective in how you present FACTS.

As previously stated I never shared many of his political views but that doesn't stop me from recognising that he seems a bit of a rarity; a politician of conviction who actively worked to serve and help his constituents in the best way he saw fit.

He did not deserve to die in the manner he did - no-one does.

That you are incapable of acknowledging this reveals volumes about you as an individual.

The cops were on scene awfully fast. Wanna bet this dude was on their radar?

And all I heard when Jo Cox died was that it was a right wing extremist.....all I hear today is MP safety. Not a damn word about the perp yet.

Our MP's are far too removed from the realities of everyday Brits lives and their cares and concerns.
In many cases the only contact MP's have with their constituents is through these surgeries, that absolutely must not change.
Yes, they may need improved security measures.....but that is only papering over the cracks. Its firefighting.
We need to start addressing core issues.
And that includes the number of Muslim extremists wandering around freely within our midst and related matters.

They justify not really highlighting the ethnicity and religion of the people who carry out these attacks by saying they fear some sort of backlash.....well maybe there needs to be a backlash if we are to put a stop to these sort of things because what they are doing at present obviously isn't working.

A tragedy for sure.
It would be all very nice to pretend that this was just one of those horrible incidents that happen in our sick world and it would be great to be able to put it in a box and pretend it had nothing to do with politics.

That's not being honest, however.

It is about politics. He was murdered because of his politics.
His murderer was in the country because of politics.
There are people in this country delighted that he was murdered - and I'll wager the majority of those celebrating his death are in this country because of politics too. Specifically our immigration policies over the years.

Been listening to Sky News UK, no news except Amess' murder.
All I'm hearing, besides what a lovely gentleman he was, is now Chief constables will be contacting local MP's about their security.
What happened is awful and despicable under any circumstance.
However, I'm feeling very cynical just listening to the 'angle' that is being spun here.
I'll wager, they will use this (never waste a good crisis) to tighten up security around those who govern us...... because of othe intelligence they have and what is to come.
Time will tell.

Two Constituency MPs murdered in recent years plus other attacks in the past , if you put yourself in their place I think there is a valid argument for better security.
