Update (11 p.m. Tuesday): Meredith Blanford, communications director for Congressman Markwayne Mullin, released a statement to the Tulsa World late Tuesday, saying the following:

“Congressman Mullin has been and is currently completely safe. He and the Office of Oklahoma’s Second District will continue to do anything in our power to bring home all Americans from the war zone that President Biden abandoned. The safety and security of the American people will always be his top priority. We have no further comment at this time.”

On discussion boards where politicians post commentary, they get hostile responses, demanding they ‘DO SOMETHING!!!!’. This guy does do something, and he gets called a moron and stupid. Cant win.

I would wholeheartedly support and commend this guy if he provided all the resources to enable qualified personnel to go into Afghanistan and extricate stranded and abandoned American's etc.

To put himself in harms way is, at best, reckless.
The most cynical amongst us - of which I would normally include myself, but perhaps not in this instance - would accuse him of grandstanding and trying to make political capital out of such a desperate situation.

If he managed to get folks out safely with his actions and did not endanger anyone else aside from himself in doing so, grandstanding or not that's some serious political capital he did in fact gain. Provided everything went perfectly he'll be up for higher offices at some point in the future and people will remember it. Was it a huge risk? Absolutely. Did it pay off? Only time will tell on that one.

If he was grandstanding he would be live streaming it. He did what any elected official should and he went a bit further. He should be commended not condemned. Is the US government really going to say he put lives in danger after their # show in Kabul?

It does appear that yes he was actually trying, at least trying harder than those in Washington. It also appears that he was not stupid enough to attempt to go on some ill-fated rogue mission into Afghanistan and get himself kidnapped. It seems that during this attempt, he didn't enter into Afghanistan from the other Trashcanistan country.

U.S. Rep. Markwayne Mullin posted a message on Instagram Wednesday saying he was heading home after “helping get Americans out of Afghanistan.”

The message came after the Washington Post reported on Tuesday night that Mullin had been in the region and argued with U.S. State Department personnel over his plans to get into Afghanistan.

The Post reported that Mullin, an Oklahoma Republican, asked U.S. embassy staff in Tajikistan on Monday to help him bring in more cash than that country allows so he could then go to neighboring Afghanistan to rescue five Americans.

The Post, quoting unnamed sources, reported that the embassy refused and that Mullin then threatened them, though the actual threats were not reported. The Post said it was Mullin’s second attempt in the past two weeks to get into Afghanistan.

In the Instagram post, Mullin said, “I am heading home. Have we been helping get Americans out of Afghanistan, yes. Is the mission continuing, yes. Am I missing, no. Did I go dark for a little, yes because it wasn’t safe to be communicating. Am I extremely disappointed in how we (United States) left Americans behind … that would be an understatement.

“President Biden and his administration are absolutely lying to the American people about Americans and our friends being left behind.”
