According to The Washington Post, the Republican Congressman was on a ‘rogue evacuation mission,’ ignoring warnings from the State Department not to travel to the country.
“Embassy officials told Mullin they could not assist him in skirting Tajikistan’s laws on cash limits on his way to visiting one of the most dangerous places on earth,” the Post reported.
“As of late Tuesday, U.S. officials said they were unsure of Mullin’s location. Mullin’s office did not respond to multiple requests for comment,” the report continues.

What better way to make yourself incredibly popular in the states right now than to MacGyver into Afghanistan and save a family? And how would you do it? Money.
A highstakes bid for the hero vote is my cynical guess.

I can't help but wonder if the entire thing is just a ruse. I'm not saying it is, and this is based off nothing more than the immediate thought that popped into my head, but it just seems like he was making an awful lot of noise with this attempt.
Carrying a boatload of cash with him pretty much ensured that the word of his travels would quickly get out, which is pretty stupid considering where he was going, especially since he has no real back-up protection. On the other hand, the manner in which he went about this ensured that everyone would find out how much of a hero he is.
The reality of it seems to be that he is either incredibly stupid for attempting it in this manner, or pretty dam smart for tricking people into believing he did.
If it turns out that it is legit, and he does successfully accomplish his goal of saving whoever it is he's after, I'll still say he was stupid for thinking he could go in there like Rambo, but he just got lucky and somehow managed to pull it off.
The odds are clearly stacked against him.
update: Meredith Blanford, communications director for Congressman Markwayne Mullin, released a statement to the Tulsa World late Tuesday, saying the following:
“Congressman Mullin has been and is currently completely safe. He and the Office of Oklahoma’s Second District will continue to do anything in our power to bring home all Americans from the war zone that President Biden abandoned. The safety and security of the American people will always be his top priority. We have no further comment at this time.”
Blanford did not say whether Mullin is out of the country, and she neither confirmed nor denied the information in the Washington Post story below.
He'll end up with no money and a bargaining chip for the Taliban.
