I like lists and making lists. Some time ago I listed my favorite TV series and my favorite characters in them. This time, I'm doing movies worth watching again, in order of most enjoyable first, but also somewhat in chronological order (especially in subsequent tiers, first my absolute favorites). The list basically represents my binge-watching order (more than merely 'most favorite - to least favorite', sometimes one mixed genre movie leads in a genre switch, or when I feel like it's a good moment to switch genre):

Gettysburg ; Gods and Generals (I know, the first one is way better, but in for a penny, in for a pound ; besides, with the fastforward button, you can still enjoy the battles and related tactical conversations without getting bored with the rest. Gettysburg is absolutely unique in its emphasis on the battle, tactics and strategy in a sufficiently funded movie with high quality actors; the only thing that comes remotely close is the next one...)
Glory 1989
Marvel series (with an obvious preference for Avengers: Infinity War ; I have a separate list for Marvel movies, favorite-to-least-favorite)
LOTR series ; Middle Earth (i.e. The Hobbit series)
Star Wars series
Alien series
Star Trek series
DC series
The Matrix series
Pirates of the Caribbean series
Transformers series
Terminator Salvation / Terminator series
Tron ; Tron: Legacy 2010
Avatar 2009
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets 2017
Pacific Rim 2013 ; Pacific Rim: Uprising 2018
Monsterverse series
Jurassic series
Predators 2010 series ; maybe AVP
Independence Day 1996 ; Independence Day: Resurgence
Wing Commander 1999
The Fifth Element 1997
Resident Evil series
Starship Troopers 1997
Serenity (2005)
Hancock 2008
Green Lantern 2011
John Carter 2012
Battleship 2012
Elysium 2013
Edge of Tomorrow 2014
The Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black (2000) ; The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) ; The Chronicles of Riddick: Rule the Dark (2013)
Ready Player One 2018
Monster Hunter 2020

That completes tier 1 (you can see I have a preference for Sci-Fi and fantasy, anything that requires to bring out the big bucks for eye candy, I try to ignore the 'wokeness'-issues with some of them, focusing on the eye candy ; I also make frequent use of the fast-forward button where required, although the movies above don't require much fast-forwarding except for the one I already mentioned and Avatar, the Pocahontas storyline, it's actually a rather annoying movie, but the eyecandy and Sigourney Weaver make it worth re-watching).

Tier 2 (as yu can see, they are in chronological order, otherwise, I'd put Galaxy Quest below Reign of Fire at least)

Judge Dredd 1995
Contact 1997

Reign of Fire (2002)

Wow. Leave a few for the rest of us huh?

Your list is so long that I didn't even check to see if African Queen was there. One of the greatest love stories ever filmed. Tough old coot ferries a nun like woman down the river through leeches, bogs bull rushes, rapids and killer Nazi's.

Oh, another great love story ''Random Harvest'' . Married and in love guy gets amnesia and eventually builds a new life for himself and gets married to another woman. His wive before his amnesia accidentally ends up working in his business and lets him lead his new life. Eventually they get close but she does not disrupt his new life and waits and waits until he conks his head again and wakes up realizing she is his true mate. Tear jerker to the max.

I can count the giant monster movies I wouldn't watch again on one hand with mockbuster studio The Asylum's catalogue counting as 3 of those fingers and a thumb. Anything with a Gamera or a Godzilla has replay value. Superman The Movie's a fav. The Wizard of Oz of Superhero cinema. Nothing else comes close. And as a gay man with masochistic tendancies Downtown Abbey.

Wow that’s some list. I have to agree with Terry, you didn’t leave much for anyone to add...lol.

I would like to suggest a few older movies though.
Zardoz (early 70s) it’s a sci-fi fantasy type. Not a lot of special effects but a great story line.

No time for Sargents ( late 50s I believe). A really wholesome comedy with Andy Griffith and a cameo with Don Knotts.

And finally Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (late 60’s). A great children’s movie based on the book by Ian Fleming. I suggest seeing it before it’s ruined by the remake that’s in the works.

Great thread you’ve started here. All the political and c-19 posts have gotten quite repetitive and pointless now. Have a great day.

Memento.

It has to be watched at least twice to find out who killed his wife.

I wonder how many viewers realised who killed her?

Random Harvest is a masterpiece. It had seven Oscar nominations in '42, but competition was tough that year!

Big problems with your lists, they are mostly Western orientated movies and only from the last 30 years or so, should totally expand your viewing to the rest of the world and further back in time, I guarantee there are movies out there that would beat almost anything from your lists.

Good examples:

Early 20th century: Horror and crime (Germany had some great directors, see movies like M & Nosferatu).
1950's & 60's: Japanese cinema totally at the top of its game (Harakiri, probably one of the greatest movies ever made, The Human Condition, probably the greatest war trilogy of movies ever made), Kurosawa was fantastic but other great directors like Kobayashi were also there.

The only really old movies that I have (1960 - 1980) are somewhere down at the bottem, in the section I didn't list. When streaming I tend not to pick the older movies (I also skipped the old Star Trek movies when I was in that section of my binge-watch list). Older movies are also harder to find on the usual free streaming websites. I have some though, like:

The Man Who Would Be King 1975
Lawrence of Arabia 1962
Zulu 1964 ; Zulu Dawn (1979) ; Shaka Zulu (1986)
Waterloo 1970
Cromwell 1970
Custer of the West (1967)

Which are listed almost 140 movies below The Forbidden Kingdom (where I ended in my OP). And a couple more almost 100 videos below that like:

A Fistfull of Dollars (1964) ; For a Few Dollars More (1965) ; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 1966
Hang 'Em High 1968
Once Upon a Time in the West (1969)
The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
The Godfather 1972 series
Scarface 1983
Pale Rider (1985)
The Bourne Identity 1988
Brotherhood of the Rose (1989)
Dead Calm 1989
Flatliners 1990
Cape Fear 1991
The Hard Way 1991
A Few Good Men (1992)
1492: Conquest of Paradise 1992
Universal Soldier 1992
Menace II Society (1993)
Timecop (1994)
The Net (1995)
Heat 1995
The Fan 1996
Chain Reaction 1996
The Devil's Advocate 1997
Ocean's Eleven (2001) series
Showtime 2002
Righteous Kill (2008)
The Expendables 2010 series
Ironclad 2011
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) series ; remakes
Dawn of the Dead (1978) series ; remakes
The Shining (1980)
A Nightmare on Elm Street 1984 series
Flesh+Blood 1985
Frankenstein 1994
Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970)
Joe Kidd (1972)
High Plains Drifter (1973)
Papillon 1973
Escape from Alcatraz 1979
Mean Streets 1973
Serpico (1973)
Death Wish 1974 series
Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
Taxi Driver 1976
Rocky 1976 series
The Deer Hunter 1978
Heartbreak Ridge (1986)
Rambo / First Blood 1988 series

Above that section (so in between Custer of the West (1967) and A Fistfull of Dollars (1964) I have:

Starcrash 1978
Mad Max 1979 series
Dragonslayer 1981
Masters of the Universe 1987
... (1987-2006 stuff)
The Thing 1982
Videodrome (1983)
They Live 1988
... (1988-2007)
The Dark Crystal (1982)
Dune (1984)
Legend 1985
Stand by Me 1986
The Princess Bride (1987)
Empire of the Sun 1987
etc.

My list is very extensive by now. I made it so I don't have to think too long about which movie to watch next. I just pick up where I left off last time. Or in between, I add movies from a list where you can sort on budget, a list I've been through up to about movie 800, picking the ones I liked to put in my list. At 800, you're still on 68M budget. So to include other movies that I liked without such a high budget, I used IMDB and sorting on number of votes. I think I've seen all the movies listed in this particular list, at least once (although I've not completed my binge-watch list online; it may have become a bit too long by now, nevertheless, it's almost as much fun making it and reminiscing about the movies).

I just watched The Neverending Story 2 a couple days ago, but that just made me wanna see part 1 even more. It also got me thinking about a few other 80s movies I haven;t seen for awhile, that I'd like to see again.

Labyrinth [1986]
Something Wicked This Way Comes [1983]
Time Bandits [1981]
Savannah Smiles [1982]
Explorers [1985]
Spies Like Us [1985]
Moving [1988]
Strange Brew [1983]
Opportunity Knocks [1990]
Funny Farm [1988]

Where The Day Takes You [1992]
Jacob's Ladder [1990]
Rush [1991]

Lord of the Flies [1963] [1990]
I think I've seen both, but can't remember which was better.

ok & a few I have seen somewhat recently

The Lost Boys [1987]
The Burbs [1989]
Fletch [1985]
Fletch Lives [1989]
Planes, Trains & Automobiles [1987]

I find it interesting how Savannah Smiles and Time Bandits are forever linked together in my mind, because I watched them back to back when I was a kid. (I assume '82 or '83). To me, they belong together.

Yep, and that's what I would use the fastforward button for, to get through part 1 slowly and take it all in, and rush through part 2 (not watching part 3 at all, I think there's a part 3, a cheap one). That's what I would do with the Terminator series as well. This time I only watched Terminator Salvation with Christian Bale, a favorite actor of mine, and Terminator 3 because I hadn't seen that one at all, knowing it was going to be bad. With those expectations, it wasn't even all that bad, especially since I've been watching the modern sequels lately, which are terrible ; hence the different listing there at the top, it's really only Terminator Salvation that I like, and the first 2 for nostalgia value, but those are already a bit outdated in terms of eye candy, the reason why I skipped them this time. I should probably list those lower somewhere along with the old predator movies, but I'm not sure where yet. And old terminator movies are better than predator, whereas for the modern versions it's the other way around.

I hadn't heard about that. It's not a remake I'm excited to see, but I would have to say that I always thought the original would've been better with much less singing.

I have a feeling the new version of the Child Catcher will be disappointing.

At times, low expectations can turn out to be a good thing to have. I can't think of any specific examples, but there's been a few movies I was really looking forward to, but was highly disappointed when I watched them. Then a few years later, I watched it again, while only remembering that I thought it sucked the first time, and then I realize it actually isn't so bad after all.
