Everything we were told was a lie.
Prevent Afghanistan from ever again being used as a base to launch terror attacks-A massive lie.the 911 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia-And the Taliban offered to hand over OBL to the Americans before the invasion-if Bush gave them evidence he was involved in 911-Bush refused the offer.

Make Afghanistan a country where girls and women are treated fairly not worse than pigs-Massive Lie.You think our governments give a f# about afghan women?Well they don't.
All women and girls in the country are now at risk of kidnap rape torture and death by islamic fanatics.

Prevent the spread of Islamic fanatical ideology-Massive lie-now the country is the global hub of those sick ideas.

Stop the production and export of heroin-oh hang on the Taliban were actually doing that until the coalition came in and allowed the production to mushroom to record heights. So theres another massive lie.

Hell America-you didn't even get your hands on those lovely resources, all those rare earth metals...no.China gets those now.

As for all those service men and women who lost their arms/legs/eyes/lives,or have seen friends blown into bloody chunks-What a f#ing shameful way to roll over and make their sacrifices worthless-Why the hell would any of our armed forces ever listen to a word the government say let alone follow your orders you lowlife, corrupt, criminal pieces of s#.

The whole thing is a shameful disgusting episode which rightly makes the UK/USA look like backstabbing mofos who couldn't give a crap about their own soldiers let alone those truly oppressed women and children of Afghanistan.

If there was any justice in this world the leaders reponsible for this massive criminal enterprise would be strung up and left to rot in the town square.
Rumsfeld escaped to hell, but Cheney,Bush and Blair should be tried for war crimes-and not just for Afghanistan-but also for Iraq IMO.They are blood demons, evil to the core.

I am worse than disgusted at this outcome.
This is worse than vietnam.

The worst thing about it-the governments got what they wanted from it,and so it is highly likley to be repeated in other countiries in future bullsh1t wars for profit for the 1%

What a difference between these people and the Japanese people, some people you just can't teach to better themselves and help them into the 21st century. One soldier who served in Afghanistan told me that it's the most backwards country he ever visited in the world. The complete collapse so quickly of the Afghan army after 20 years of supplied training and equipment shows they were just in it for the money, they never believed in what they were doing for their country at all.

As Ron Paul said back in 2007 a total waste of blood & treasure for Americans.

On the flip side, it.mught be easier to take them.out once they establish themselves in control.of the country.

It was impossible to take out an enemy target that was not centralized and scattered from village to village, cave to cave.

With them taking over the country, it will force them to have a centralized leadership and chain of command, or the entire country will fall to anarchy.

What bothers me is as advanced as human civilization is, that 50-60 years ago Iran and to a lesser extent Afghanistan were making huge strides towards modernization. Now they are ruled by religious zealots. That said, there are a significant number of religious zealots in the US that would love to see our country be 'ruled by the bible'.

Afghanistan is in such a tough spot with some 40 years or so of conflict. I do not know what the best options. All I know that being ruled by the Taliban, and their dogma that prevents women from being educated among other serious human rights conflicts is not in the best interests for those who live there.b

we should have gone in to wage war not politics.

This is spot on. Politics is for after war is won. This has been the problem ever since Vietnam, politicians trying to dictating how wage war.

this is what we need real answers to. We spent 20 years there, with no real objective, and no exit plan that is discernable today. Much like what I have been told Vietnam was like from a political perspective. Being in a war you aren't allowed to win, was hell from a soldiers perspective.

But the political end game is something that drives these agendas, costs lives, cost ass loads of money, but remains largely hidden from almost everyone, and ISN'T QUESTIOINED BY ANYONE. That part should be an issue and amazingly enough, it's just not.

Another messed up thing.

The Afghan army has been supplied, trained and supported largley by NATO states, so not only have we lost money and lifes in this pointless war but when the Taliban have taken over we have gave them a nice fully equiped and trained military.

Mostly just the small arms will be useful to them in the long run.

The Soviets supplied the Afghan People's Army very well indeed with tanks, artillery, helicopters, aircraft, even SCUD missiles. On paper the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in 1996 had a relatively well equipped military for the region. By 2001 most of this equipment was inoperable. Even Soviet equipment which is known for it's longevity and reliability requires regular maintenance.

You still see the Afghans using Soviet tanks and artillery supplied by the Soviets to the old Kingdom of Afghanistan in the late 60s and early 70s, but they've only managed to maintain them by cannibalising parts from other examples.

Afghanistan is a very rural, uneducated and underdeveloped country so will lack a lot of the infrastructure and expertise required to properly maintain military equipment. They could get foreign help with this though, Pakistan being the most likely one to do it.

Even at that NATO trained and equipped the ANA almost exclusively for counter-insurgency and internal security roles. Militarily they won't pose much of a threat to their neighbours. Though it doesn't bode well for anyone in Afghanistan hoping to topple the Taliban.

I wasn't thinking about them being a threat to their neighbours but rather to their own people or anyone who tries to stand up to them in future.

Spot on! War should be devastating, violent and short. When it becomes protracted by politicians for scoring points is when I have a problem. As you stated, it's a waste of time, lives and money. I think civilian control of the military is an essential balancing act but when it comes to war, the dogs should be let loose to do what it is they do best......win.

The U.S. had best get our civilian people out, and our military follow, ASAP.

""Afghan President Ghani has fled the country, Fox News has confirmed.

"That's it. It's over," a U.S. official said.""

Was pretty much innevitable - I don't understand why Biden didn't delay the original US evacuation/surrender until winter time when traditionally violence has died down/groups hibernate until the winter.

The original plan was to do this at the height of the traditional spring offensive and would have resulted in an even quicker take over by the Taliban but there would be chance to evacuate people and arms caches from the country over the winter period.

The Taliban/Russia agreement is interesting - I guess it's Russia's reward from the Taliban for crippling ISIS/ISIL.
