Ok, I've read all the comments and the OP. I've decided I'll post whatever comment, at whatever interval, about whatever I choose, whenever I want.

Not really into being told how to respond to an OP OR comments.

Nothing personal.

As far as longer threads go, I like to read the whole thing before I respond because I don't want to repeat something that's already been posted nor do I want to ask a question which was already answered on page 6.

You're a better person than me. I never make it to the end of page 4 before responding to the OP.

I read a lot more than I post.

With a dumb sense of humour like mine, I need to remember that silliness isn't always appreciated so best kept to a minimum unless it's in a thread which looks like it will fit.

There's also some great information from others in serious threads which don't require any input from me.

As I am often guilty of such offences, I can only offer a SnF.

My good sir, I, too, fall victim to the alluring, intoxicating scent of half-reading. This is just a minor suggestion that we all attempt to impose self-limitations on such behavior.

I feel quoting a poet will illustrate my point with perfection:

You do you!

But did you REALLY read it? Because, I didn't tell anyone what to do, and in fact, it's noted more than once that it's a gentle request that can better the site as a whole. You must REALLY despise the Ts&Cs that...well...limit how we can respond and interact on this site.

And remember, there's always the option of not responding if it adds nothing to the discussion. You know...if.

I'm just presenting options. Have a fun rest of your day!

Thanks.

I must say that when my sarcasm and passive-aggression is forced, it is generally delivered with a sense of humor. I'm just glad that this one is staying up...for now.

But the title clearly states:

Aren't comments the things that readers make?

Even the original post is a comment, it's just the one that initiates the conversation. Regardless, the spirit of my OP is that, if you are going to respond to a comment--ANY comment--read it in its entirety first.

While your points are good, decent and pithy, it does beg the question: Does that mean we can't misconstrue a post if there isn't any clarity as to what the person is yapping about due to a public education and a complete destruction of the English language?

A lot of spin doctors here.

You say black and they hear white, so now you are a white supremacist.

See how easy that was.

Social media ..... an invention straight from hell.

So, I'll retry this rant, but this time I'll sugarcoat it with an abundance of niceties since my other one was lovingly and compassionately nestled into the Trash Bin because I was less forthcoming with a positive approach than is preferred.

In mine recent post that shall remain unmentioned in both title and date of publish, some fine commenters chose to respond to my Post of Origin and levy the claim that I failed to consider certain things in my monologue.

I carefully pondered their assertion and came to but one single epiphany: the problem with their responses lay in the fact that, as well-intentioned and pure of heart their responses must have been, I specifically did discuss that which they claimed I did not. I must be frank with you, dear reader, but that rubbed me in the wrong direction. It also rekindled in my mind the truth that this issue often pervades throughout ATS threads, so I felt it an appropriate topic for a rant.

Herewith, I gently implore those random and unnamed individuals (and others similar in practice) who participate in such shenanigans to, at the very least, peruse the entirety of a post before issuing a declarative response. More often than not, failing to do so leads to unfortunate misunderstandings and the wasting of the OP's time in having to respond and clear up such obviously innocent miscommunications. In relation, it has a slight potential to reflect more poorly on the person failing to properly amass the totality of the point being shared than the player who has shared said point.

'Tis my heartfelt desire that I witness no more individuals succumb to such a fate, and that we all endeavor to read, in its totality, a post prior to formulating a response. I must believe that, if we all do so as individuals, the culmination of efforts will elevate the quality of this fair site, and further bring us closer to our destination of denying ignorance.

May this post find you well, and I wish you all success in your daily happenings.

I feel your pain.

One of my first threads on this site was a harsh lesson.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Note I specifically asked in the title to read in it's entirety before responding and note that the original post is unedited.

Yet 5 pages later I was still being called a reckless inconsiderate immature drunk.

I can't believe you're still out here advocating for drunk driving.

I used to write much longer threads and far more involved posts. People will go out of their way to misunderstand what you are saying, they won't make it past the headline, or simply assume they know your position and completely do away with nuance.

Reading comprehension has taken a deep, deep dive into dangerous territory where one group of individuals carries on with learned, vernacular, and conventional colloquialism. The other group either pretends or really doesn't understand the language, syntax, or structure. They will outright criminalize vernacular and colloquialisms and invade the territory of the learned. We call this cancel culture these days but I think it goes far deeper than that.

A school system that refuses to teach the basics of civil society and individual utility and instead focuses on activism and political indoctrination over the course of decades will net you a society that can't read, can't do simple math, can't understand basic instructions, spend all their time on narcissistic pursuits, and pursue no knowledge beyond what is rote and necessary to function where a robot soon will anyway.

It's the dumbing down of America that we all feared *might* one day happen (lol). Well, here it is.

Make all the requests of these people you feel necessary. But be aware that it could very well be a wasted effort.

But this OP is kind of long and a little whiny. I tried to read it all but my mind wandered away slapmonkey. I know, I am not supposed to reply if I do not make an effort to contemplate on the content, but I did read it all and almost fell asleep.

Just kidding, the OP is correct, lots of people do not read much of the OP. What stops me from finishing reading it is links in the thread I go to and of course videos I watch from the thread. I do try to look over the rest of the OP when I get back, but often unintentionally skip things once in a while.

I am sure I am guilty of this on occasion, and that is why I wind off topic with replies in relation to the whole thread some times. But I am not reading everyone's posts before commenting, I usually try to read a few but not all of those before me.

I've found if you quote them, quote you, then write "DERP" it really pisses them off. Give it a shot.
