The Banana crises, well one crises after another in the food chain. I like bananas in my cereal and when I go cycling. In this country we usually get bananas from the Philippines, Taiwan and not sure of the other country . ( maybe its Ecuador ).
There is a fungus called Panama Disease that is ravishing the Banana industry in many parts of the world now. It has to do with the cloning of the Banana plant. These cloned Banana's that we get usually get here in this country cost about 1 buck for 5 bananas, but recently we are now seeing 4 bananas to a package. How are bananas in your country selling these days.

Enjoy the video, kind of scary.

To be clear though, because not everyone knows what a clone is. It’s not done in a lab.
It’s from clipping an off shoot of one pant and planting it.

That’s how seedless bananas are grown anyway.

One of the Walmart’s here and the Metro grocery store both have signs saying sorry out of Nana’s.

Thanks.
The video goes into that. In Thailand, this type of Banana on many of its plantations are now being affected by the Panama Disease. The video sure is an eye awakening. I do got to say that the bananas we get from Taiwan are larger and cost more, but they sure taste like a banana when fully ripen and makes good banana nut bread.

i buy bananas every week for my children

8 for £1
or 5 for £1

or organic 5 for £1.60p - £2

i haven't noticed and increase, but i have noticed a 20p - 50p increase in a lot of other goods/produce

That video was excellent btw, learned something today

Q) is there a problem with human ingesting a banana infected with the disease ? how much do we know about this?

From the video, I'd have to say they cut down the plants that affected, so its unlikely they harvest any bananas from them.

This has been a problem for decades. The #1 banana already went extinct in the wild in the 50s, the Gros Michel. There was a group of researchers trying to save the bananas in the 90s I think it was, they all died together in a plane crash.

Someone once told me that if you see the price of bananas go up, you know there's some sort of financial crisis coming.
IK can attest to that over last 20-30 years.

I'm looking out my "office" window, at a rapidly maturing bunch. I reckon about 30 pounds. It's been a little on the dry side here so it's skimpy. 50 pounds is average.

I was hoping the ripening would be delayed a bit but, oh well. My broken 5th metatarsal is going to make it difficult to deal with the harvest.

In any case, there will be an abundance of banana here very soon. My neighbors gave me some mangoes last week. Other neighbor has a lychee tree (which has a few pitiful lychee right now). So, lots to go around and there is always banana bread. Fun fact, banana bread is not bread, it is cake.

Is it just me or do bananas not taste as good as they did 15-20 years ago? Typically I think it is one of the most consistent tasting fruit unlike for instance an apple or a peach where one can be outstanding and the other it’s hard to get down 1 bite.

Maybe instead of companies trying to create “vaccines” for illnesses that have a high rate of survival they work on creating better varieties of these foods not only for longevity but to help get rid of hunger but I think we all know the reason

Sort of like tomatoes?

"Commercial" bananas are, more or less, a single strain.

Thank you for posting. The local markets have have had a sporadic supply as of late....this explains it. The prices haven't gone up any but supply has dwindled. Very informative.

Yeah that’s another. Store bought tomatoes are just blah. The grape or cherry are not too bad but a regular tomato just has little to no taste. One of the best things is a fresh garden tomato sliced with a little salt
