Because the power grid is more secure than a pipeline? The aging power grid....

Haha, adapt and overcome. I have had this idea for years, but am to lazy to put it in action....put an alternator on each wheel and have it charge its own battery pack as it goes along. One wheel would be powered at a time while the other three charge. A computer program would regulate power and switch wheels on the fly, so at any one time, threee battery packs would be charging every time a wheel rotates.

Probably dumb.

If I was on a farm, i would dig some deep trenches and fill em with poo. Once you cover em up they will produce natural gas. If you had several of these you could produce enough to run your car for a long time if its ready to run LPG... Look at all the vents in your local landfill.

Anyway, if it ever got that bad would anyone really want to live in a zombie apocolypse???

Even if a company has a fully enclosed network, they can still be hacked.

If you have a network, you are not hack proof... Because humans interact with it. Obviously it's a lot safer than one connected to the internet, but there have been many instances of intranets being compromised.

At the end of the day though the company had a flaw. I don't see what that has to do with the feds.

Do the feds run their IT? Is this a federal owned company? Am I missing something?

I am genuinely curious on what we expect a president to do in this situation.

As stated, the perpetrators were described as eastern European hackers but that doesn't mean Russia or China didn't have anything to do with this.
That's the $64,000 question. Actually, there is nothing he can do other than to retaliate. Retaliate against exactly WHO? They are blaming Russia for this and if biden retaliates with a counter cyber strike, and so on and so forth until the shooting starts.

What exactly are the FBI, the CIA, or thr military going to do? Do you want us to start launching attacks on citizens of foreign countries because they may hack a private corporation?

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. The FBI, CIA, and military should sit on their asses and only go after those darn Trump supporters. Nothing else is important, especially some silly hacker who caused a fuel shortage. Not like that's a big deal or anything.

Once again, it's a private corporation. The government can make suggestions for what the company can do to upgrade their cybersecurity but they're under no obligation to follow those suggestions.
a reply to: Xcalibur254

So is Nascar .. Yet we sent FBI agents there for a fake hoax crime...
Its cute how we cherry pick when private corporations matter...

There isn't a private corporation in the world that wouldn't take federal assistance to STOP hackers or have MULTIPLE back up systems..

Unless they work for fools like you .

The other option is to pass regulations. But corporations and the Right generally oppose those.

Regulations come after. We first need to SECURE the systems because of NATIONAL SECURITY... After we secure it with multiple back ups and go threw it with a fine tooth comb we can deal with the useless congress and regulations ...

Honestly this reminds me a lot of the Texas power crisis earlier this year. The companies in charge of maintaining the power infrastructure had known for a longtime their equipment was susceptible to cold weather. Thr federal government had even told them that multiple times. But those companies chose to maximize profits instead of modernizing their equipment.

Texas put all its eggs on one basket with Energy that was their weakness . As was this HACK ... No multiple secure BACK UPS ready for their main system .

You dont' put all your eggs in one basket.

Much like in that case, the blame lies solely with the company. They've known for a longtime that ransomware attacks occur and they might be a target.

No. Its falls on the government and all Agency's. This is a matter of NATIONAL SECURITY . Not Jimmy bobs pizza store that got hacked...

They are all responsible for this incompetence.

They chose to do nothing to neutralize that threat. In the end they've lost millions of dollars because they didn't want to spend the money to upgrade their cybersecurity.

Just like the FBI , CIA , NSA , Congress and BIDEN administration

Extra gas cans filled with gas in the garage vs a 50k vehicle. With paying insurance and maintenance.

Shrugs.

I'm skeptical if it was state sanctioned.... And if our government starts rolling with that narrative I'll be worried.

The new red scare needs to be checked. I'm far more concerned about China.

What's worrisome is people's willingness to say we just need to go attack someone when no one even agrees what happened and who did it.

I don't know who's playing us, but we certainly seem to be getting played, and I'm not just talking about this issue, but many.

Is fuel not a critical infrstructure? How many soldiers have died in the middle east protecting oil? So when these fools shut down a nuclear reactor and put 30 million in the dark, including hospitals and such....thats the companies bad?

Sure a private company runs the pipeline, but its critical infrastructure, not Walmart losing control of who all bought a fishing license last year.

My grandparents had a water wheel on a small creak that turned a generator which powered a set of large batteries back like early 1900s, so there are ways... In any event people will die or group up into communities where something like that could happen.

Well it also does 0 to 60 in under 3 seconds...a man needs some vices... BTW I work from home now...use to drive 100 miles per day, now maybe 15 to the gym and back. My car gets about 400 miles on a tank so it takes a while now to need gas where before I was going through a tank every 3 days or so....

can add the CIA

The CIA are co-conspirators. Kennedy wanted to crush the CIA into dust. The CIA ran guns into Syria.

The CIA has destroyed more democracies than the US has supported around the world.

So Biden didn't get involved in the Colonial pipeline ransomware attack and left them to fend for themselves.
They ended up paying the ransom of $5 million opening the door wide open for more of this kind of attack.
Who will be next?

FFS, it isn't the government's job to babysit your IT infrastructure. How much more big government do you want?

I'm not saying they sit on their hands.

If a crime is committed, authorities investigate...

But what did we expect the federal government to do right in the moment? That's what I originally asked.

There's a lot of discussion about military and all sorts of other propositions from members in this thread... And I'm curious on whom do we use them on?

We just find out the nationality on (possibly) rogue actors and hold the nation of origin accountable?

So if I hack a company in another country does that justify that country attacking America?

Perfect example...now imagine four of those running independantly. Anyway, funny how nothing is new really.

Hell, grow some tats...the Egyptians used em for batteries. With all these led lights, a 50 lb bag would last awhile...then make fries and process the oil for your bio diesel. lol Although fry grease has too much water.

I only have to go 25 miles one way. I wonder how far an electric scooter will take me. And I don't mean the ones you sit and drive, I mean the ones with tiny wheels that you stand on.

That is still rough on 25 miles as they go about 15 MPH and have not much more than 1 hour at full speed, but standing for 2 hours each way lol... 50cc moped would go about 30 mph and get you 100 MPG. You can lease a Nissan leaf for like 99 per month, but the 50cc moped might be best if you have good weather and traffic is bad. If I lived in LA I would have a motorcycle.

I'm on the outskirts of a country town so small it's considered a village. Population 750, and all but my last 2 miles of travel is all open highway and interstate. In fact, here's a cool pic I got of the sunrise at the edge of town. Open it at full size to get a better picture of how sleepy and small my town is.

I guess its the lack of response publicly by this admin and congress that makes peeps a bit angry. This level of attack deserves a George Bush esque we are gonna kick someones arse when we find out who did this.

Then again...I get it, this could be some little snot nosed Brit teen in Leicester just having fun....like the Pentagon hack.

Truth is...this was only a matter of time when Uncle Sam thought it wise to tie everything together with 50's tech.
