Look, no one is against the greener sources of energy where and when they work, but no one wants to sit in -15 degree weather freezing their butts off, either because the windmills can't turn and the natural gas won't flow. Sometimes, you need to have some fallbacks to keep you going.

this is a good time to note that the electrical grid in texas was deregulated, privatized, and removed from the interconnected networks to avoid federal regulations and increase profits to a small number of wealthy individuals in the REPUBLICAN party........ 88% of texas electricty is supplied by natural gas and coal power plants...the few wind turbines they have they were TOO CHEAP to weatherize for the winter..if they had they would not have froze.....there are wind turbines in antartica that work just fine....and the new green deal has even been voted on so pewople need to stop putting the blame there

It'll get worse, many will die, but this is what the anti-Trump/Biden voters wanted.

Not a whole lot any of us can do except make future plans not to rely on the power grid.

Not for us smart people! I have gas guzzling generators able to power every whim. Mmm, nice thick pollution and power at the environment expense

3rd world indeed, as this sounds more like bad planning or execution than a problem with the energy sources, as North European countries have very cold weather and none of these problems, as far as I know, and have very high levels of renewable energy sources of electricity.

An excellent observation. I am not on the climate change doomsday cult bandwagon, but a reality check is required.

If the windmills do not freeze in Sweden why do they freeze in the US?

In all likelihood, the energy sources in question are designed to operate in colder climates.

It is the kind of issue insurance companies and local governments face when assessing natural disasters' threat to an area. Not planning and building a once in the forty-year event into core infrastructure is negligence. The only question is, where does the responsibility lay for such a debacle?

Granted, I have oversimplified the issue to a degree. As Christchurch, New Zealand, shows, earthquakes' land damage leads to people getting affected by flooding more often.

this is a good time to note that the electrical grid in Texas was deregulated, privatized, and REMOVED from the interconnected networks to avoid federal regulations.[quote/]

Texas was never part of the interstate grid.
The only time they supplied power outside the state was during WW2.
And the feds had to waive federal regulations to get the power.

One of the biggest problems is the building codes in Texas.

No insolation in the walls between apartments. Substandard insolation in outside walls of homes.

I have lived in Texas and my sister still does.

We have thicker insolation in homes in the Calif desert then homes in Texas.

Here in Calif my home has 1 1/2 inch foam panels that fit the windows that you put in in the winter and this will cut your heating bills by 50% or more.
www.homedepot.com...

a friend of mine that left Calif years ago for Texas has been living in his bomb/tornado shelter under his home for the last 4 days because its warmer than his house.
in his house its about 30 degrees and down in his old 1960s bomb/tornado shelter its about 55 degrees.

jeez all that happened because it snowed for 3 days straight in Texas?

Gee! Talk about being used to the sweat weather or heating the house issues" Its been so cozy for so long down there in the everything bigger in Texas state. Dam! These people are going to be so screwed when it starts snowing and last for months, maybe even years.

Maybe Canada can send a delegate to visit Texas, to show them how to build power plants, that are cold weather proof and approved resistant for up to 2 weeks. And After two weeks? Then your on your own...Or! You can. Well! You have to apply for the deluxe package and ramp it up to cold weather resistant for up to 3 weeks.

Hopefully they wont turn cannibals in the meantime. But 3 weeks before all hell breaks out in Texas? Is pushing it.

It looks like the Federal government wouldn't allow Texas to turn on their normal power. This is similar to the scam that happened in California with Grey Davis. Forced to buy outside power at highway robbery levels.

Ya, sorry, when I see AJ I dont believe 99% of what that guy says.

Also, how does the dept of energy have jurisdiction? They(Texas) are mostly unregulated by the fed.

Wanna know a secret I learned in my shed in the back yard in Oregon?
...
If you put solar panels under the right kind of lighting in your shed, you can trickle charge the same batteries running off the inverter powering your lights...
...
V shaping panels helps reflect/absorb the light.
...
YMMV

eta
Build a box using solar panels whereas the light is suspended inside...unproven hypothesis at this point as far as my own experiences go. I'm sure the market for self sufficiency will remain unpopular.

Greeny is trash, waste of money and still dependent on oil, is a lie, is no green in the green energy but waste of tax payers money.

It is been proven, but nobody listens.

I am in the south it is cold baby, but thankfully we got real energy no fake green one. Thank god.

I feel sorry for all those states that are now freezing and not heat to keep them warm.

Blame it on global warming.

Are you suggesting that 'the greenies' control the weather?

Maybe through HAARP,I have heard about this but don't know much
about the topic.
