Marty Wilde came for the bacon and eggs.

So this little piece of insanity comes out of the Oregon legislature. A guy named Marty Wilde has introduced a bill that would ban all processed meats from long-term care facilities and hospitals and prisons and similar places where people can't get out.

Democrat Representative Marty Wilde tells PJ Media he introduced the vegan bill at the behest of a “physicians group” because a “plant-based” diet is much better for people stuck in nursing homes or sick in a hospital. The upshot of what he told me was that banning food gives people more choices.

In the words of the bill, not only are all “processed meats” forbidden from these settings, but the facilities “shall be” – by force of law – required to offer an entirely plant-based menu at the same time for residents, staff, visitors, and others.

Cheese, milk, sour cream, eggs, and honey – honey – are not allowed on the menu, either. Pasta is made with eggs, so that’s out. Powdered eggs in that pancake mix are forbidden. Yesterday, macaroni and cheese was considered to be a vegetarian dish. If this passes, it will off the vegan menu – unless you can figure out how to make it with that cardboard cheese that doesn’t melt.

The bill would make an entire range of things impossible to use, even honey, because they're not vegan. The goal is a plant-based diet, but that could be achieved through vegetarian means without eliminating so many things that are useful and easy to acquire and cost-effective. Imagine the food cost increases from having to pay for vegan alternatives or the outcry when it's discovered that some places are just feeding beans and rice three meals a day with supplement powders.

Additionally, when we're talking about the elderly, they need stuff that tastes good in a lot of cases to get them to eat. I am not saying that vegan cannot taste good, but that elderly taste buds and diet preferences can be and are fickle. Grandpa who is used to his bacon and eggs is not necessarily going to gracefully settle into a plate of tofurkey.

Now, I am guessing this bill will not see the light of day as a reality, but it's a reminder that crazy does exist. And I am wondering how exactly Mr. Wilde thinks this bill will give anyone more choice? What if the choice that grandpa wants is the one that's banned?

All hail globalism!

This is getting things set up for eating bugs. The EU set up rules to start grinding up bugs to be used in place of flour and as an additive for more protein. Imagine all the great protein you will get by eating pasta made with ground up bugs instead of wheat flour! YUMMY.

Can't wait for the soylent green to make an appearance.

Bugs aren't vegan.

Neither is Soylent Green.

Nice. Imagine working hard all your life and being lucky enough to make it to a certain age. Then imagine having to go to a long term care facility to finish out your journey only to find that the bastards took away one of the only remaining joys there is to be had in life... your BACON?

WTF??

Why do people hate joy?

Pork is usually the problem in most bills. We finally get a law banning it, and it's in the worst way imaginable.

I think the bill would just be required to offer a plant based meal. Im not seeing that it would forbid non-vegan options.

Hospitals, nursing homes, and the other institutional settings in Oregon would be forbidden by force of law to charge more for these more expensive options.

100 percent plant-based meals shall be offered at no additional cost beyond the cost charged for a comparable meal that is not plant-based.

So you can still have non-vegan options but if you would like a vegan option, then the pricing is set at a comparable non-vegan dish.

The article is very sensationalist.

Eating factory farmed animals is stupid. Not only do they suffer their entire lives but they also do harm to the environment.

But, sure. Call the small minority of people who want to protest against factory farming - stupid.

All processed meats ... gone. No bacon, no lunch meats like thinly sliced roast beef - buh-bye French dip. A lot of these facilities do fried bologna sandwich days for nostalgia for elderly residents because that's something they ate as kids. It's not a regular, but it's a fun thing.

And then there are the cost items. How much vegan alternative is actually cheaper? In most cases, it's not.

Protest all you want via your own diets, ya grass munchers. Just don't deign to tell ME what to eat or where/who to get it from, capisce? We good that way, yeah? Otherwise you can take equally insufferable, arrogant & frustrating bossy BS and attitude problems if you can dish it, yes?

It's cost-prohibitively expensive to use vegan stand-ins/imitations. My husband has a whey allergy, we do use alternatives now and then. When I can justify the cost. He likes vegan cream cheese on a bagel, but $5 for a few ounces is highway robbery compared to the real McCoy's cost. Edit: And yes, I've made a cheesecake with the crap. And no, it was not worth the expense, we agreed to never do that one again.

Okay A Vegan Diet, maybe, but you can't just force it on people, they have to navigate toward it themselves.

This screams of an ulterior motive. Most Vegan diets supplement with Soy Beans where they can. The issue is that Soy mimics estrogen. I'm sure we all know what happens when Men get too much Soy in their diet.
