Lying with statistics. The population grew my probably 50-75mm people in that time frame.
On a per/1000 or 100,000 person basis I’d suspect the death rate actually declined.
You get more absolute deaths by count in a larger population. So, yeah, the absolute number of deaths will increase.
Thus, the above link means squat.

The estimated total deaths for 2020 in the US is 3.2 million, the largest increase(percentage and raw numbers) since 1918 which saw World War I and the Spanish Flu.
