She tells me "here hold the kitten". As she extends her arm with this tiny furball ball in one hand, I am thinking, "WTF".

A few days ago my wife comes home with this creature (as she tells me, "I almost ran it over".), saying "aww babe, you want to hold the kitten? Sitting in the comfort of my couch I said, "get that fking thing away from me", I already knew.

As I watched her pet it, the reaction from the kitten as I saw it, was freighted. My eye peaking from the left socket was fixated, zoomed in on this damn cat she had brought home. She asked again "babe, you want to hold the kitten". My first though was, "another damn animal you had to bring in!". This time was different though. As this damn gray furball brought his eyes up and looked at me, we made contact. Extending my left arm, opening up my fingers, the gray furball jumped into the palm of my hand.

Fking cats, I hate em. But. This one is different.

And that is what cats do.
From a person who used to be a dog fan.
Rescued 3 kittens from certain death over the last few years.
Probably 10 in all .
I take them to the vet for a good checkup , their shots , and a parasite check .
Then adopt them out to ONLY folks I know.
Except these 3 .

The 3 I have are good for me at my age.
I get plenty of exercise keeping up with em and taking care of em.
Talk about cats being soft ?
A long time ago , my kids had just a normal size ordinary cat.
The boxer next door aggravated the cat all the time when the neighbors let it out .
Cat got tired of the dog's sh__ , ran across the porch and dove full fledged on the dog's back and latched onto it's neck.
Rode it for a good 50 yards using all claws and teeth.
Dog was never the same again , and when outside , would only lay on their front porch.
True story.

I can't stand cats, they stink! And coming from a rancher, that should tell you something! I can stand knee deep in cow crap and I still think cats stink. Can't stand the smell of cat piss. And cats pee every place so you can't avoid it.

Now that we have that part straight, let me tell you a story about a cat. I was working out of town at our old place for about 4 years and we had this stray tom take up residence on the front step. He was totally feral. Big mean sucker too. Great big, in fact. Had war scars all over him, both ears had hunks missing; this dude was a serious badass! He was actually cool lookin'. All white with one brown ear.

Whenever we'd show back up at the house he'd bolt, and I'd never see him the entre time I was there. Over time he'd show up for a second, usually in the mornings, but then he'd run off again. He was kind of an enigma. After a while he'd show up, but he'd never let anyone get near him. When we got back to the house permanently this cat was a fixture at the place. This was his "hood", and he was King!

One day I look out the window and the wife is standing in the front yard actually petting this cat! I walked outside and sure enough the cat is actually cool. So my wife goes and gets some cat food and boy does he dig that stuff! Now we've got a cat...great! (not great, cuz I don't like cats...they stink! Remember?) But this cat was cool. I just knew if I shaved his fur off he'd be covered with Hell's Angels tattoos or something. This dude was as hardcore as they come! Just bad to the bone. I'm pretty sure he had a Harley stashed in the bushes somewhere. So we named him "Scooter".

My wife tried to get him to come inside, but no way was he having any of that. At night we'd hear these absolutely epic cat fights. Sounded like five people being murdered all at the same time. He'd show up the next day and be covered in blood and have chunks of hair and flesh hanging off. He'd look at you like..."Yeah, well you should see the other guy!" He was a warrior like no other.

One day I was working in the garage and Scooter comes in the garage and jumps up on the bench. He's all happy and wants to get petted. He was like..."Hey, what's up dude? Can we like do some welding or something?"

So I had to go inside the house to get something and Scooter follows me inside. Wait...what??? Scooter walks across the kitchen into the living room and jumps up on my wife's lap and lays down and starts purring (LOUDLY). It was like he'd lived there all his life. He retired from his life of crime and gangster-hood right then and there, hung up his brass kitty knuckles, rolled over on his back and wanted a belly rub.

Got him cleaned up (he actually loved to take baths!) and took him to the vet to get shots and checked out. The vet was terrified of him at first. By the time we left he said Scooter was the most "ambivalent cat he'd ever seen, just okay with life". He was amazed...because Scooter looked Atilla the Hun reincarnated as a cat. He let us live in his house for many years after that.

I have tons of stories about Scooter the Cat. He was a cool cat.

Some folk's are cat people, some are dog people, some are just animal people (but not necessarily into snakes and spiders), some folk's just don't like anything.

Lady's have tender hearts, they often feel broody and a little kitten can assuage that for a time, if you are no good with animal's and can not find it in your heart to give the little fella a chance she will pick up on it at an instinctive level and that can actually ruin a relationship.

Give the little buddy a chance, get it seen to by a vet and look forward to less spiders and mice once you get it trained to use it's litter tray, also remember a human kid is a whole lot more demanding and yes this is not going to grow up to play sports with you, probably never learn any trick's but cat's are actually very affectionate, also free acupuncture when they do the kitten thing massaging you with there paws which is also a sign of affection, never be cruel to it that always has a way of coming back on you - believe me.

Pretty much sums a whole lot of things up right there!

Though, I actually like snakes and spiders too.

I am animal person with a preference for cats. I like that they don't tend to always stick to your knees needing like dogs do. They're usually cool with hanging out in your space and the occasional scratch.

It's said that the cat chooses the person, and that's usually true. Once they decide, it's the devil's own time getting rid of them, but they usually pick right.

Cat story:

One of our two young boys has a fetching thing. Some cats do. This one is darn near obsessive about it, but the thing is when you get a cat who will fetch, they are often very particular about it. A dog will simply fetch any old thing at any time. The cats I've known who will pick what they will fetch and sometimes even where and how they like to do it.

I had a cat growing up who would only fetch the tops off 2 liter bottles and only if you threw them up the stairs at our house. He'd barrel up the stairs after the cap, carry it back so that it hung down over his chin yowling around the it the whole way, and he'd drop it about five steps away and sit expectantly. Part of the game is that you had to do your fetch.

Well this cat, Shazam, fetches the foily wrappers off of candy after they've been wadded into a ball. But he gets so darn excited at the idea of the game that you cannot go to the refrigerator with the intent to get any candy without him coming. And he will hear you all over the house. Then he sits at your feet every inch like the expectant dog, ears up, eyes wide ... waiting. He gets so tense when he hears that foil roll up! Then you throw it and he's off like a shot, and you can chuck it with force clear across a room or two. He doesn't always bring it straight back. Sometimes he bats it around a bit first, but sooner or later, he's bringing it back and he drops it right under your feet so you can throw it again. Once he's going, he'll fetch for a good 15 minute stretch or more provided the foil doesn't roll under something where he can't get it.

I guess my point is that sometimes, cats are more like dogs than we realize.

Definitely Siamese heritage there somewhere.
Siamese , for some unknown reason, take to fetch quicker than dogs.
Even Labs.
An old veterinarian explained that one to me once upon a time.

I suppose it's possible. He doesn't have any of the color markers for it, but he does have a long, rangy body type.

I have a kitten that loves to play fetch with a straw.
Will go at it all day if you let her.
Definitely at least mostly chocolate point.

Single piece of Spaghetti on the floor is good times for my cat.
Does the fetching as well with things especially the little silver balls of foil.
Of course sits and stays and lays down on command.
Puts special toys inside the shoes/boots of People he likes.

And all this makes cats a lot funner than dogs to have around.

Oh, all animals have their charm, their personalities, their quirks.

My mom and I were discussing the ways that cats use their voices. They're all different about it, and the thing my mom said to me that rings true about every animal really is that the saddest thing in the world are the people who never take the time to get to know an animal and really notice how different they all are and appreciate that.
