Taking them to the shop to see if they were truly destroyed...doesn't work.
He told the guy to fix the ones he could.
He also risked the contents being ultimately exposed.

I think Hunter was told to destroy them...he did it in an ineffective manner...then realized he may be giving up some leverage and chose to have them recovered for his own protection.

He may have not returned to pick them up because he felt he was under observation...OR...he felt they were best left there as a ticking time bomb against his enemies.

It wouldn't surprise me if Hunter felt he was about to be killed or even planned on ending his own life just before he dropped the three Macbooks off.
