So it says they plan to disband the police department and have the sheriff's department pick up most of the slack (except for mental health, medical and traffic cases). The Minneapolis Metro area (which is the area to be affected) had a population of about 3.28 million back in 2010 (can't find a current count).

Seems like the sheriff's department would then be forced (by necessity) to hire most of the Minneapolis Metro police that just lost their jobs due to the disbanding and all county taxes would have to be raised tremendously to cover salaries, equipment and operating costs.

Congratulations Minneapolis Metro! You will now be paying twice as much for what you already have!

I'm not so sure about that...

I obviously don't know how this will work out in Minneapolis -- I don't think anyone has all the details figured out yet -- but I do know of other cities which simply enter into an agreement with the county Sheriff's office and the city basically transfers their law enforcement budget from a municipal police department to the county Sheriff. Facilities, vehicles, other equipment can also be transferred from police to Sheriffs.

In such arrangements, the Sheriff's deputies tend to do more actual criminal work than the revenue collection tasks that city police are often assigned. To that extent, the county services can actually save cities money.

Tens of Thousands will be sacrificed for an experiment !! 😤

Are you postin' in the right thread, X? Anyway..

One of my oldest friends was a career 82nd Ranger. He and the
bride finally settled in a suburb of the Twins when he finally
rotated. Made E6 more than a couple times-- a long story in itself.

What I'm getting at is --- if I'm as sure as at present there are at
least two more of those 'human Quisinarts' above ground per square
mile: the media would have us all concerned over absolutely the
wrong personnel.
I really think if things unzip, the NG wouldn't even get to the party
before trigger time was over. Maybe snacks. Sleep tight.

It’s a mixed bag. There are some groups that say “okay we’re going to defund them by removing all of their mental health/crisis intervention training and put that into another agency that actually deals with mental health.” Which is great. For too long late enforcement has been left holding the bag for things society can’t figure out how to deal with. It’s absurd that people have no other immediate option for help in a mental health crisis than calling the cops. That’s pure insanity. So things like that are a good idea.

The problem is when you have other groups like in LA that want to slash LAPD’s budget to 1/10th of what it is now. Now I’m fully aware that LA has practically no crime, but a cut like that seems a bit much.

People want good law enforcement officers then people need to stop expecting their police department to act as society’s garbage disposal for the things society can’t or won’t deal with. You want good cops, then train your cops to be good cops, don’t train them to be mental health intervention specialists.

Listen to any big city scanner for a night. They tend to call the police for the dumbest things. "My son is being disrespectful, I want him out of my house!"

Yea, I’ll listen to the scanner some night.

A lot more of this gonna happen if they have to wait longer for response, etc. by disbanding.

What a stupid thing to do.

Politically it's a loser and if the Dems do this nationwide they seriously might lose to Trump.

As well on its own is a dumb idea. This time I criticized the left for this idiotic idea and also criticize the left for being hypocrites about COVID when it comes to the protests. But criticize right-wingers.

ALL cops aren't racists. Just train them better

I call out all hypocrisy even on the side I'm on most of the time...the left

Too bad the on the other side people don't exercise honesty and consistency.

That's right. Full title is : Minneapolis city council set to announce their commitment to disbanding the city's police department. Here's a few sources:

So Minnesota voted blue in the 2016 election. It should also be mentioned that Minnesota is an open carry state ( permit required. )

One second.....hahahahahahhahahahahahahaha

Ok. Had to get that out. I'm better now.

What better way to hand the state's electoral votes to Trump later this year when this far left "experiment" blows up in their faces. I've yet so see a compelling argument as to how and why this will work. So if anyone on ATS has any insight on the proposed nuts and bolts of this plan, by all means....share.

Really don't need police; we have sheriff offices, they'll just staff up and provide the kind of police work we used to have before the police moved in and killed their momentum.

Police are NOT Sheriff's. The main sheriff is an elected seat too; so you can always vote him out to hold them accountable. Nation should follow suit. Can't hold a cop accountable for anything, can always hold a sheriff accountable. Has always been this way since the inception of the police force.

It's crazy to me how many people think there is no difference between a Sheriff and a Police Officer. Defunding and disbanding police has no effect on the Sheriff's office.

Getting rid of the police doesn't = wild west, no law enforcement; it just means the law will be enforced by officers that can be held accountable.

Incorrect. That's an idealistic way of looking at it, but it's false considering manpower and resources will both be significantly less under proposed regulations.

Here's the current Sheriff's views on the issue:

He's basically saying "when this blows up in your faces, don't blame us."

I think this would be fascinating social experiment , who knows we may learn something valuable.
Seems a bit risky though, I hope they have an exit plan that does not involve disbanding the city.

It will be wonderful to see every one being good self regulating citizens.
A good balance of live and let live is ideal.

Being institutionalized and punished for petty crimes seems to be Charles Manson's gripe with the world.
He would have probably been a really nice person otherwise. JK

I would definitely buy stock in the Minneapolis Mob if it were possible.

when they say "disband" do they mean the shut down of police stations?
closing county jail?
firing the policemen and policewomen who work there?

if so, then that would be an awful move.

does this mean, stores, industry, banks, pharmacies, are up for grabs? no police to stop anyone from looting these places of business?

There will be community based "protection". And if people get out of line, the community can run the perpetrator down and administer justice as they see fit.

There are some hypothetical virtues to Anarchy, but for some it will be a bitter pill to swallow.

I don't know the specifics of what they have planned which is why in my OP I asked if anyone could provide further logistics.

But odds are, THEY DON'T HAVE a comprehensive plan and wanted to make the announcement to pander to the black community as quickly as possible, worrying about the details later.
