Russia declares state of emergency after massive oil spill in the Arctic Circle

President Vladimir Putin has declared a state of emergency in a region within the Arctic Circle in far northern Russia after 20,000 tons of oil leaked into a river from a power plant.

The spillage occurred on May 29 when the “oil products” leaked from a tank in an industrial plant operated by a subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel, the world’s largest producer of palladium and one of the largest producers of nickel, platinum and copper.

Discussing how news of the spill emerged in the televised meeting, Putin was reportedly shocked to discover that local authorities had only learned of the incident from social media two days after it happened, and he admonished the region’s governor Alexander Uss, Reuters reported.

“What are we to learn about emergency situations from social networks? Are you alright health wise over there?” Putin said, the news agency reported Wednesday.

Is that the full video? I thought it was an advert. If I'd been undercover for months, I'd hope to produce something a little more substantial than like, 4 minutes. A little underwhelming if so.

Things like this take YEARS to build airtight cases and get information on the key players and higher ups. Look at it from a law enforcement point of view. Wouldn't you want to keep that line open as long as possible, to get as much dirt and as much evidence as you could? Now, dont get me wrong, if they know that a group is about to assassinate someone, or do a mass killing or something - Yes, they obviously need to be taken down immediately.

I would imagine they use the same strategy as when infiltrating a drug organization or organized crime. They had informants in mafia families for years and years before they took them out.
