Personally I think china meant this for the US, only it got away from them and blew up in their faces. I seem to remember not that long ago we had that toxic sheet rock from china, then toxic toys and pet foods. So china does have a history of sending poisoned goods our way. And now with this trade war going on, chinas looking for some way to get even.

Why would they want to hurt their biggest customer?

That would only hurt their own economy in the long run.

Not everybody who comes in contact with the disease will actually get it and fewer still will die from it so this drama and fear mongering needs to stop.

Because their biggest customer thanks to President Trump is demanding a more level playing field. So, yeah, they'd be willing to take a hit if it meant getting rid of the thorn in their side (Trump) to put things back the way they were.

America needs to start producing ALL it's own products. Period. To quit relying on their 'enemies' to produce, for example, their medication! That's insane.

I never said "this must be silly" I said it's typical that with something that is affecting the entire planet, someone has to postulate that it was created solely to target them and the rest of the world doesn't exist.

It's like someone saying that everyone they see on the street is 'in on it' gang stalking them... either deluded or paranoid, really... has nothing to do with the site at all, more to do with having a persecution complex, where only you are the sole reason for something.

As someone else stated, thousands of foreign students are being kept at bay... and as someone else said, we're letting some in. But they and the people they come with, have to be quarantined for 14 days, just as with everyone else. You can bet this will seriously impact us also.

The world is larger than the US. But planet America is the centre of the universe, to some, I guess....

We've always ensured students from over seas are medically checked when returning especially when a virulent disease has been seen in many areas. This is vastly different.

They're not just hopping off the plane and going "Weeee, I'm paying many thousands a year to study while these Aussies are paying merely a thousand or so. Lets get studying gang!"

I find the thesis of the OP unlikely.

Hurting us hurts them - the tariffs showed that. Neither economy benefits.

China has a very strong need to maintain societal order and contentment to the greatest extent possible. This is true for more all centrally planned governments. In this case, that means showing they have the situation under control. You can’t have +1bn people freaking out and thinking the government can’t solve all your problems because it goes against the narrative that they can/will/do/etc.

China also doesn’t want to look foolish or powerless - the Russians have done the same thing over and over again (think Chernobyl).

If this was some sort of weaponized pathogen, they did it very wrong. But, If it was it is a weaponized pathogen that wasn’t intended to be deployed (at least not now) and the world finds out about that - China is in a world of S. Who wants to buy goods from a country that’s trying to kill the world and may have contaminated goods?

There’s more angles to point out here but long/short I think China’s been caught with their pants down just like the rest of the world.

Well the biggest impacts would be Amazon and Walmart if all Chinese trade was suspended due to lack of product. Next would be Port of LA and the California economy. China will recover. They have the equipment and manpower to produce merchandise in large numbers quickly.

US economic impact would be the same as a large scale labor strike ending and cheap products begin to flow again. Duration is the limiting factor. Can US small business pickup the slack fast enough and cheap enough to provide for retail outlets in the Amazon marketplace? And will China be able to compete with that two week ocean voyage versus 3-4 day production and delivery upon ordering? Price will be more per item, but smaller orders can be placed to save warehousing expenses.

Lol. That would be like cutting off your legs so your opponent couldn't won a running race against you.

Trade war wasn't doing jack shhs to China. China has enough population and land mass to keep it stable. The trade war is total BS. By reducing the population of China it will hurt her economically to no recover and you see it. Swine flu on food too. You'll know when its too late when countries start invading China. china trade deficit was 500 BILLION DOLLARS PLUS.
to put it in dirt simple terms for every 1 dollar we got from china in trade they got 500 dollars.

anything that alters that cash how hurts...

along with they freely and without penalty were stealing intellectual property from us to the point (and no exaggeration) they were stealing product information from trade show and having the factories gear up for production as the show was going on or by the end of it.

now when trump demanded a more fair deal and imposed just a few of the trade tariffs he proposed they came back to the bargaining table... they even have a multi step deal with the first one they give up alot and we only dont implement planned tariffs.

so why would they do that if (as you claim) they were winning?

i was kind of thinking along similar lines as OP except i don't think it's to harm our economy and destroy the US, but to create a situation that forces the world to implement socialist reforms to deal with the situation when it reaches a point that the global economic system collapses.
