I think you are correct, he has mellowed a bit. I bought the album that came out in 2018, I couldn't really get into it, maybe time to give it another listen, but there were no fireworks I could recall.

Oh, if this don't make you happy and groove a bit, then you are suffering from perpetual miserableness!

Turn it up, within the tolerances of YouTube's crap audio quality.
