China’s National Health Commission has confirmed human-to-human transmission of a mysterious Sars-like virus that has spread across the country and fuelled anxiety about the prospect of a major outbreak as millions begin travelling for lunar new year celebrations.
Everything we know about the deadly new virus
Scientists are yet to fully understand how destructive the new virus, dubbed 2019-nCoV, might be. Researchers and investigators are just beginning to understand where it originated, how it is transmitted, how far it has spread and what symptoms patients present with.
As of Jan. 20, case numbers have skyrocketed to over 200 in China and abroad. Chinese authorities also confirmed health workers have been infected with virus, suggesting it has achieved human-to-human transmission. As a result, authorities are taking steps to guard against its spread and the WHO will convene an Emergency Committee to explore whether the virus constitutes a public health emergency on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Researchers believe the amount of cases may be higher than current reports suggest and three US airports have begun to screen incoming passengers for signs of illness, as have busy airports in Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said he is recovering at home but will undergo further tests for the new coronavirus, which has already proved deadly overseas.
The state’s health department hopes to have the test results within a few days, the Courier-Mail reports.
The number of cases of “2019-nCoV”, which causes a type of pneumonia, has surpassed 220 across the globe and authorities are concerned it could spread quickly.

If this really spreads human to human and we have people flying on planes in SIGNIFICANT numbers this week... this is a major issue.
Its gone international... its novel and originated from animals.
and its killing medical workers who are treating patients.
warning signs
China and other countries affected by a novel coronavirus will jointly attend an emergency meeting convened by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday night, confirmed China's foreign ministry on Tuesday.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will convene the emergency committee.
Dr. Tedros wrote on Twitter that the emergency meeting will ascertain whether the coronavirus constitutes a public health emergency of international concern and what recommendations should be made to manage the outbreak.
As of Tuesday, four countries – China, Japan, South Korea and Thailand – have reported confirmed cases caused by the novel virus.

This virus pandemic, crap scares me more than wars. We ARE OVER DUE. Last one was the Spanish, flu. This may not be it, but it could be just a mutation away. I wish, sometimes, we paid more attention, to this stuff, instead of the goofy, politics reruns.

Whatever the Chinese govt says, double or triple the people have died and been infected. Wife is Chinese from central China and word is its much worse than being let on.
It’s also rumored that this was man made and done with intention. Wife’s sources usually very good.
There’s another rumor that this was released in Hong Kong to stop protestors and it didn’t take there. Then someone flew to Wuhan from HK and it spread. Not sure I buy this but it is plausible. SARS started in southern China and only spread north via travel.
And the kicker, Spring Festival aka Chinese New Year is next week and it’s the largest annual migration of people in the world. Somewhere between 100 to 250 million people will travel inside China back to their birthplace to visit family. Add to that about another 5 to 10 million who will travel abroad.
