Deep Purple was metal. I think that from what I define metal as, and taking the shows into account, the band that just hit the nail on the head. And
inspired so many later metal bands, was Priest. They were the text book metal band. Before there was an Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera,
etc. The effect of their songs when performed live, was that you knew that they were written just for that. Metal Gods, Hellbent for Leather,
Exciter, The Ripper, The Green Manalishi, Victim of changes, Living After Midnight, Breaking the Law, Grinder, Tyrant, and later songs like Hellion,
Screaming for Vengeance, and You got another thing coming.
Those songs were more appreciated when seen live. Green Manalishi, which was the last encore, and Metal Gods, in particular. The two lead guitars
were ripping, the vocals were awesome. And the Harley, the black leather, etc. It was pure original metal. I hear their riffs in lots of newer
bands.
