Def Leppard.

HAH!

No, Metallica's the best, they have persevered.

Guns 'n' friggin Roses was awesome, dust off the tapes and cd's, and give them a listen again, you won't regret it...

And of course, no one can compare with Sabbath and Zepplin.

I want to mention a whole bunch of bands...
Like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Brutal Truth, Painkiller, Helmet, Godflesh, Monster Magnet and blahblahblah, but...

"The best METAL BAND of all times"...

Try listen to this if you get a chance to do so:

Slayer - Hell Awaits (from the "Decade of Aggression" album)

Make sure you hear exactly that version (and turn up the volume).
When those chords from the main riff starts going, together with the drums and bass.... wooooaaahh... orgasmic... monster-riff...

Wow!! great thread!! Crossing a bunch of genres. I'll start off chronologically, you can't discuss metal without mentioning Led Zep or Black Sabbath. Hmmm...I think metal hit it's peak in the 80s (Slayer and Metallica), then sort of went to sheeit since. I hate butt rock, but I have to admit that Bon Jovi, Def Lep, Motley, Judas, Iron, played a big role in the 80s (the best musicians of the big-hair genre were the Scorpions, by the way). How can we leave out Boston, and other heavy classic influences? Uhhhrrrhh. Gggggrrrrh. Here's my list (and it seems to reflect others'):

1) Slayer (hands-down the greatest)
2) Metallica (even though I hate them, their pre90s stuff rules)
3) Pantera (are supplement in the 90s...there was noone else!)

C'mon, this trio is going down in history. There is harder, faster, whatever, etc, etc
Change the order if you want, but these three define heavy metal.

P.S. I'm trying not to be biased either, I like other bands a lot more than these three. However, these three are the best metal bands ever.

well i don't know about all the classifications and what they mean but the all time best metal band, the one that i think really started it all is Iron Maiden. The metal band that i feel is the best is Slayer. And the one that really broke through to the rest of the world is Metalica up through the And Justice For All album.

Led Zeppelin, without a doubt, is the finest heavy-metal band that ever played. Of course, being one of the true originals in this genre didn't hurt either as they were able to shape and mold this pulse-pounding musical form. Plants' vocals, Bonham's incredible timing and Page's creative guitar virtuosity have left their indelible brand in the annals of popular music culture. A very close second, I would have to mention the music of Judas Priest. Rob Halford's vocals are clearly a standard by which all other HM frontmen are judged. Even during Halfords' decade long hiatus from Priest, he continued to be a major influence in Heavy Metal. Furthermore, Halford, with Judas Priest, set a fashion that has endured throughout the metal world -- leather! Musically, Priest's "double-axe" attack with guitarists Downing and Tipton also setet a standard for mind pounding duets. After Led Zeppelin and Priest, the rest seems to be, at least for me, poor imitations of the fathers of Heavy Metal.

Probably because most of there music after Stormblast was mediocre(and thats being very generous). Although with that said, i do like a few songs of theres which are post-Stormblast.

Burzum, Children of Bodom, Darkthrone and At The Gates for me.

Don't know if I'd class Led Zepplin as metal but they were probably the best pure rock band ever. As for classic metal I'd have to say AC/DC or Judas Priest and for newer it would be StaticX, Union Underground or Powerman 5000.
