THANKYOU for helping me make sense of #3620.

If I recall the PGP saga correctly, the first versions were considered quite secure. So secure that the developer came under all kind of heavy handed pressure from NSA and other government outfits for making industrial-grade encryption available to Joe Citizen.

But after years of pressure, the pressure let up and the assumption was that PGP had finally built in a back door for government people to read the encrypted messages. Since then, PGP has been "just another product" and not held in particularly high regard. As EMN mentioned, I would guess the hackers etc. develop their own encryption systems and avoid the commercial [and probably compromised] products.

A lot of it is a game. Canada's Hushmail touted privacy using encryption, but was then found to allow governments to read people's email pretty much on demand.

You want privacy? Deliver it by hand and don't use any electronic gear to create the message.

It’s like the call was designed to see if leakers were listening.

Since the whistleblower hoax began, the following things have unfolded;

- Dems forced to vote on an impeachment inquiry.
