Out here if you are stopped on the road, every person stops to ask it you need help. They actually intend to help if needed.

UC-Berkeley ?
I didn’t need to read past that to know this guy is a Leftist radical.

This is a norm among a good percentage college professors nation wide.

Send them packing ...

In the end this is just about a radically partisan philosophy instructor and I doubt most city people hate rural people.

This symbiotic relationship between cities and the rural community is a healthy one. One hating the other for partisan reasons is ludicrous.

“I unironically embrace the bashing of rural Americans. they, as a group, are bad people who have made bad life decisions,” Kernion wrote.

“Some, I assume, are good people. But this nostalgia for some imagined pastoral way of life is stupid, and we should shame people who aren’t pro-city.”

“Rural healthcare should be expensive!” he wrote.

“And that expense should be borne by those who choose rural America!”

“It should be uncomfortable to live in rural America. It should be uncomfortable to not move,” he added.

I suppose a guy like that sees a future where government run facilities, fully automated, produce the cities needs and we all sing Kumbaya while playing our ukulele's because we have nothing but leisure time, to think deep thoughts. They will never understand we humans need a purpose and reason to get up in the morning or we self destruct. They don't even look at the city around them to see the clear evidence that kept people turn bad.

To be fair, I'm a rural man. I've made plenty of bad decisions. Voting Trump wasn't one of them, but boy have I made some mistakes.

That reminds me of something that happened to me while I lived just outside Birmingham (and worked in the heart of it):

I was basically living out of a suitcase since it was a temp job, and one weekend I was bored... so I figured I would watch a movie. I had seen a VCR rental place on my way to and from work (yes, this was back in the VCR days), and I decided I would rent one with a few movies.

I drove to the place and walked in. A very nice young lady asked if she could help me and I flashed a big ol' smile and told her I wanted me a VCR and some movies. Suddenly her demeanor shifted to nervous and she excused herself. I didn't think anything of it until the manager came out. He introduced himself and asked if he could help me. Again, I smiled that big ol' smile, told him who I was, and said I wanted to rent a VCR and some movies.

He stared a moment and asked where I was from. I told him and he busted out laughing. He finally told me that in the city, no one smiles at others like that and the girl had thought there was something wrong with me! Turns out he's originally from the next county over and we both had a good laugh at how silly them city slickers are.

It frankly shocked me that anyone would get that nervous over a smile... but they did. I didn't change my ways after that either... I figured if the silly slickers wanted to get all offended over a smile, they'd just have to get offended. I'm me and I can't be anyone else.

Frankly, I think the "country folk are better than city folk" argument is as much a limp-spined one as the reverse is. Just as many people forget who PAYS their bills as who feeds them. Both rural and city alike are at fault for the animosity between them.

Since I have been on ATS, I have seen numerous threads similar to this one, where some egghead with a bloated ego in the city says something profoundly stupid and insulting. Thus far, I have yet to see one where someone in the country did the same to slickers. It's always the slickers starting it.

Me? I don't care if someone wants to live in a city. Different strokes for different folks and all that. Just keep your crime and interference in your neighbors' lives away from me and we're good! You can keep the pizza delivery and cable TV, too... it doesn't make up for the crime and interference. I won't berate you, and I certainly won't think less of you.

This professor saw fit, however, to throw out a few insults. Now, you can talk about how we throw the insults right back, but you're missing the point that we are responding, not instigating. I learned around age 6 that if you throw the first punch, no one cares if you cry over the next one being thrown at you.

As far as needing to be paid, yeah, it's nice... but take all that money away and we'll still eat, we'll still figure out a way to get what we need, and we'll still be happy out here. Let's see how happy you are sitting there eating your money.

Your story reminds me of an episode of my BCT: "quit smiling you f'ing pukes!" Drill Sergeants weren't technically allowed to use profanity, but we all got the message, and none of us were in a position to file a complaint, and smiling means you aren't taking what you're hearing seriously; information that could save somebody's life in the very near future should be taken seriously.

Now, as far as how that applies to renting a VCR and some tapes:

How dare you sir! How dare you put on a charming demeanor when every instance of that young lady's experience indicated men with big smiles are trouble! The proper posture for a male interacting with a smaller female is one of demurred reluctance. You must telegraph that they're the ones in charge. That's seriously the only way to get laid these days.

Jackson Kernion, according to his website, has been teaching multiple philosophy courses as a graduate student instructor at UC-Berkeley since 2013

So, he’s teaching PHIL 101 for a stipend for the last SIX YEARS.

Sounds like the kind of guy you’d want to take advice from.

I guess I’ll add to the pile of commentary here ... this is an obscene, ludicrous, unnecessary comment that sustains the trip of ignorant-ass Coastal elitism.

“Rural” Americans are America, the same as “city folk” ... as well as all the rest of us. Christ on a crutch.

First of all, I f'ing LOVE your new sidebar avatar. Second of all, UC-Berkeley is not just some hum-drum school. This is a coveted admission. I would have LOVED to go to UC-Berkeley, and I envied my friends who got in. So this is a guy who is doing entry-level philosophy instruction. Now, philosophy is one of those topics that sort of drive your entire focus. The things you learn in Philosophy-101 have a long shelf life. They will inform every decision you make. I see how you downplay the 101 philosophy teacher's bias at UC-Berkeley, and I raise you 100. Meaning you must call at 201 if you don't want to fold. I also discard one, dealer. Gimme that.

Trust me...unpaved roads are not graded...it is grated. Thus why when it rains they ripple into mini ruts that will shake apart your vehicles and give you the jitters! Lol.

Reminds me of this one news clip from years ago, they were asking children were do milk and eggs come from.

More then a few said the store, maybe one or two said chicken and cows. Or when my sisters kid, hes about 9 we gave him some homemade fried potatoes, just basically bigger sliced versions of french fries, he said he wanted french fries not potatoes.

There so used to eating fast food and french fries, that he did not even know that french fries are made of potatoes. Dopey little nuck, freaking almost 10 and didn't even know that french fries are potatoes.

Anyways this professor, reminds me of that.

Nah, I treat others the way I want (expect) to be treated. I don't trust people who don't smile. I'm not talking about that fake thing that used car salesmen paint on their faces... I'm talking about a real smile. As for getting laid, who wants it from a sourpuss? The most attractive part of a woman is that bright, welcoming smile.

The universe needs more "Berkeley professors" like Nancy Pelosi's butthole needs more genital warts. There's already too many and we still haven't found a cure for them.

Also, they're both pains in the anus.

Here's some Hank now:

If you generalize against a group of people that way, its usually called bigotry. But as of late the left gets a free pass to attack certain groups with impunity.

Yes, it is graded due to the process of reducing the gradient of unpaved roads. My family has multiple sized graders that attach to our tractors on the orchard too.

I was attempting making a rural joke. I included LOL at the end of my post. Guess I need to learn of a better way than LOL to inform folks I am pulling their leg. Oops, not literally pulling anyone's leg either! Ugh...I give up.
