ATS chat is down

If chat is abused in such a way then it becomes a liability to ATS. It has to go if certain things are happening that draw a shadow over the whole board.

I have a question for you SO. Could chat be handled in the same way as RATS? If there was a signifigant points allocation required, perhaps people would be more inclined to keep the discussion non-sexual. Just a thought.

Making the chat feature open only to those who have proven themselves worthy of a little extra trust is probably the only solution. I could probably name a dozen or more members just off the top of my head who I know for a fact would not engage in that sort of salacious banter, surely you could name ten times more because you've been here much longer. It's definitely not a universal problem.

It could also work on an invite system, like the steering com. and the research forums. Again, just a couple of thoughts.

I will not get over it, maybe to you it was just a chat room, but to me, it was one of the few places I socialized, and could talk live to people I respect and like.

I, for one will miss ATS chat a lot. There are some amazing people in the ATS chat room - including the mods that had to patrol the room - Asala you are the best of the best. BUT I also want to thank all the other moderators for looking out for all the members. Its a really tough job that they have to do, and I know they have helped me out of a not so nice situation. I am positive that SkepticOverlord and the other moderators had to consider what to do about the situation in chat for longer than a few minutes, and it had to be a hard decision to make to turn it off. especially in the light of him having to pay for the software to run chat.

For all the times I tread the edge, I apologise. For all the times I enjoyed chat, I thank you.

I gotta say, it deffinitely sucks that I can't talk to the community actively while I read the forum I love so much, but if its needed to keep the rules in place, I guess it has to be so.


Depressing though, to know that a few bad apples can ruin the whole bunch when it comes to the chat.

This is a privately owned site -- no one has a God-given right to be here except the owners. I never really used chat much, but if what the mods say is true and it was becoming a cesspool of sexual talk, that could become a liabilty to the owners legally because underage visitors could see inappropriate conversations and financially since advertisers could pull out if it turned into an adult site.

People should be thankful for the efforts put in by the owners and mods to make this an enjoyable site for everyone.

Where is the fairness and quality when rather taking effort to fix a problem is less important than just shutting people out? This site wont grow if you just shut down the things that take a little work.......heck if money is an issue then so be it you ge6t me a cost for making a chat under better protocols and I will help you get the money to at least get started......


You know why I am willing to spend money on this new protocol , because my heart is in the board not the job of running it .........there would be no board if all we did was set back and let it get shut down a peice at a time.....


Chat is more than just chat by the way its a real time meeting area where things like threads and avatars that look better and suggestions for making our own activities more in line with T and C are discussed , some of us actually get into chat to get real time news on areas of discussion we might have missed you know I have even been directed to some very pleasing scientific threads that I would have never found because Im not into the UFO scene.

But in chat someone pointed out a thread that showed me how to find something to my liking in the ufo forum , and you know what it to me wasnt even a UFO issue but a real life find in the scientific community......


CHAT is not a waste of time ......you come up with the protocols and get me a start up price and I will send you a check or money order to get it working just get it back for us who respect it and enjoy it......

first and foremost ATS has to limit its liability, otherwise we'll lose more than the chat feature. Do you realize the potential here? If ATS knowingly allows minors to be solicited without doing something to stop it, they can be found at fault for whatever happens as a result of that. I like ATS a lot, it's one of my favorite forums, that's exactly why it has to be protected. I realize you're upset, but you'd be a lot more upset if the whole site was shut down. I'd be more than upset, that's for sure. So let them do their job and protect their butts, and I'm sure a solution will be forthcoming.

Okay now that SO has chimed in I am glad the feature was pull. The last thing I want to happen is to see ATS branded as "Adult" content. I really hope you out all the worst offenders S.O. I really do.

Chat is really not needed for ATS to function. If ATS chat is the only reason some people come to ATS maybe should check out some chat dedicated sites... for the criminal pervert(s) out there, I hope you rot in a supermax somewhere...

sad about the chat but it happens all over now. Unfortunately people have not learned how to be unmoderated and respect what they are doing and where they are....

If you want to have adult convo's go to an adult site or use an instant messanger program. ATS is not the place for it by personal message or in the lobby. There is children entering the chat as young as 13 and less.

Well, Skep, I'm with you on this. I'm sorry to lose the chat and all, but if you hae that much prurience going on and you may be in trouble with the authorities -- or even if the potential exists -- then it makes sense to shut it down.

I'd begun seeing a lot of potty-mouth teen chat on there recently myself.

Figure out how much it will cost to make chat viable again and tell me .........Put all the protocols in place you want .................give me the price , I will send you a check or money order to get it done ..........the point of this is dont punish the masses of a few illgotten miscreants..............I want to protect ATS to wait let me repeat that............

It's about not just violations of the T&C, but illegal activities too.
