I like LED for all sorts of purpose.

They use less energy, which at the end of the day is a good thing.

Your government is not going to bust down your door for using old light bulbs or new types, calm down.

Make America sane again. x

Thank you! I'll check that out... I keep forgetting to make a note of what I actually need to get so even if I remember while at the store, I'm still outta luck. It's just not something I think about until I turn on the light in the morning.

THis is total BS. I know there was a scientific consensus that lightbulbs would destroy the earth next year. Do you all want to DIE????

Where did you get that ?
I would like to know.

Well another thing I know is that there is a percentage of the population that like to insert lightbulbs into their bodies for pleasurable experience. I think its probably a scientific fact that LED's and so on are much safer as sexual toys than any old NAZI hate lightbulb. Does Trump not care about anal and vaginal lightbulbist? Probably not, Trump hates everyone.

Replaced my whole house with LED's and don't regret it. Philips (and other manufacturers) makes a warm temperature (2700k) bulb that produces the same warm light as incandescent. Most are made for dimmers as well. They don't buzz when dimmed like incandescent either. We have a large home with three kids so we have seen a meaningful improvement in our electric bill.

I've always hated fluorescent lighting and preferred the incandescent warmer bulbs. Now that LED has caught up, I don't see a need for incandescent bulbs.

Also, the cost has come way down. You can get a 16 pack of 60 watt bulbs for $23 at Home Depot for example. That's less than a $1.50 a bulb.

Guess we should have Hazmat teams and evacuations back then also.

Did the US have hazmat teams back then ?

Im starting my post with an open admission to my own bias.
I studied low voltage electronics in school. (Several classes on the subject)

I live in a state that manufactures LED's. (Cree has a plant here and employs people I know.)

There, if you're a snowflake, and you need a reason not to listen to me, to feel safe, I just gave you two. Don't bother going on if you already don't want to know what I have to say, my post isn't for you.

An energy efficient or LED bulb can put out a lumen count equal to the old incandescent bulbs. (measured by actual light metering technology and not anecdotal human eyes)

The power cost of this, is fractional.
Old incandescent bulb, 60W
New energy efficient, 10W-15W
From a sixth to a fourth of the energy cost.

LED bulbs can last well over a decade. (Thats LED ONLY bulbs, not some weird gas hybrid.)

The same technology that makes the numLock button light on your keyboard, people. If you have an old keyboard, and your numLock button is on... That is an LED. Got a really old computer that is somehow dead, but the little tiny light still comes on? That little tiny light, LED.
Little digital clock faces, the gauge cluster light in most vehicles, etc... LED.

If you think incandescent is superior, you're entitled to that opinion. You may have that opinion. You will never have the power to make it fact. The only power you have, is about 50 Watts higher than whatever a sane consumer has, and that proves nothing except that I giggle at our power bill differential.

All that being said, there are good reasons to keep incandescent bulbs around. They can be used to make really good drug paraphernalia, that is thermally resistant, see through, and can be engineered into a smoking device quickly and easily with just a bottle cap.
It gives the little kid from Home Alone an extra weapon, broken glass, the high heat.
I'm not sure if Uncle Fester is LED compatible, he probably prefers incandescent.
I don't get to make rips and zingers like this, in an LED thread, I really had to come here for them.

Wow, that's actually a lot of nice reasons.

Also, for the dude that's grossed out in the bathroom? Consider this. You're supposed to be grossed out in bathrooms. If you're concerned about self image, you need those "make me look ugly" lights in YOUR bathroom, because you're going out in public, I assume... And if you go into other buildings or other homes... What if they use LED lighting there, and you prepped yourself under sub par incandescent lighting??? At least if you prep under the same conditions, you have a preview of what they'll see. Otherwise you're flying blind on that, you think you look good in incandescent, but you walk into THEIR LED lighting, oh boy.

Of course maybe you want the rest of us to use incandescent, so you can look good everywhere, since LED doesn't make you look good. In which case, you shouldn't have read past my warning at the top of this post. You're trying to impose your ideal on others, to benefit yourself. That's clear snowflake territory.

My opinion is at least a numbers game. Yours has something to do with superficial beauty.

All that said, hit me with your best rebuttals. This is a discussion, I want some citations and sources though. Let's get some facts straight. I know half of you incandescent guys are already Google searching links on toxicity and glass company propaganda, let's see the special interest rebuttals.

This is your thread incandescent guys, so you go first. Bring me some citations and some science, then I'll do the same and we can all wear our big boy pants here.

They have their uses, great for flashlights, I also use them on my boat. In my home I prefer incandescent bulbs, it's cold here, the heat they release is not waste.

They didn't have to bust down anyone's door, they banned them from being sold, they just had to wait for them to burn out.

It's about choice, why do you oppose freedom of choice?

I know that the movement to switch to different bulbs was supposed to be energy saving but I doubt it really saved anything.
By the time those bulbs are manufactured and then shipped from china they have used loads more energy that an old fashion type.
Not to mention the hazmat issues with the twisty florescent bulbs...

How about new TVs?
All of my flat screen televisions put out tons of heat that can only be from energy usage. I cant believe we save any energy from the switch over.

I'll have to disagree with you, at least regarding energy savings starting from home use. One of my former houses was huge. I replaced ever single light bulb. The energy savings was immediately noticeable. Our energy company did a good job of providing metrics. There was no other change in the household. Those bulbs have saved me $$$..

We were going to move from that house, and it seems petty but I did remove those lights and take them with to the new house (I did it before I listed). I had invested way too much. Since I installed almost all of them within a months time frame I know that most of them did live up to their advertised lifespan and some much longer. There were one or two that died pre-maturely, I actually think that had more to due with the socket an/or electrical surges.

Back to the OP. I think it is great that people can have a choice. Old incandescent lights are by far the most pleasing to the eye. Nothing worse than seeing a cfl in an stained glass lamp!

I do like LED bulbs- but not so much the 120VAC ones.
They're poorly built and use too much power for what they give out as light. Looks ok... I'll probably keep using them until I can wire my own place for low voltage lighting.

The old style bulbs, though- they serve a real purpose.
Up north we use them as small space heaters.
When it's -20f out and the wind is blowing, a 100w bulb on your heating fuel filter (plus some insulation to keep the wind out) can keep the fuel flowing.
If the fuel stops, the heat stops.

History shows us that anytime devices are made more efficient then people just use a lot more of them or use them more and end up using much more energy.
