There is a classic Twilight Zone episode called "To Serve Man" having to do with extraterrestrials making first contact:

To Serve Man (Twilight Zone)

It's a great episode and if you haven't seen it you must see it. Here's a basic synopsis of the story:

"Initially wary of an alien race who came "quite uninvited", international leaders begin to be persuaded of the Kanamits' benevolence when their advanced technology puts an end to hunger, energy shortages, and the arms race. Trust in the Kanamits seems to be justified when Patty, a member of the cryptography staff led by Chambers, decodes the title of the Kanamit book: To Serve Man. The Kanamits submit to interrogation and polygraph, at the request of the UN delegates. When declaring their benevolent intentions, the polygraph indicates that the Kanamit is speaking the truth.

Soon, humans are volunteering for trips to the Kanamits' home planet, which they describe as a paradise. Kanamits now have embassies in every major city on Earth. With the U.S. Armed Forces having been disbanded and world peace having been achieved, the code-breaking staff has no real work to do, but Patty is still trying to work out the meaning of the text of To Serve Man.

The day arrives for Chambers's excursion to the Kanamits' planet. Just as he mounts the spaceship's boarding stairs, Patty runs toward him in great agitation. While being held back by a Kanamit guard, Patty cries: "Mr. Chambers, don't get on that ship! The rest of the book To Serve Man, it's... it's a cookbook!" Chambers tries to run back down the stairs, but a Kanamit blocks him, the stairs retract, and the ship lifts off."

So my question and thoughts are about the idea of extraterrestrials harvesting humans for food. So my thinking if extraterrestrials had FTL technology they would be way more advanced than us. So if the extraterrestrials wanted to harvest us for food they would have done it by now. So if you believe the extraterrestrials are here and do exist then I guess it's safe to assume they are not going to harvest us for food.

I guess you could argue they are harvesting humans but I think the rest of us would know if a few million were harvested. I read since 9/11 about 1 to 4 million Arabs have been killed by US bombings. Maybe the extraterrestrials are harvesting Arabs before the bombs hit. Truly advanced technology would be able to allow the extraterrestrials to do things would not be able to imagine.

I test to think the extraterrestrials do exist and are way more technological advance than us so they are very difficult to detect. I have a pretty dark view of humanity so I think we've probably tried to the nuke ourselves several times and the extraterrestrials prevented it. I think besides preventing us from nuking ourselves the extraterrestrials really see the Earth like a zoo.

I think we are pets for the extraterrestrials and they love us.

So ATS, why are they here and what are the extraterrestrials motives?

Food for thought. There are two compounds found on earth that we have yet to find in space; protein and chlorophyll. Everything else can be more easily located; minerals, rare elements, frozen water, by mining asteroids instead of descending to a planetary surface.

They are us.....religons are dogma....they are here because they exist as we do.

Perhaps Humans are a galactic delicacy that can only be found on Earth and bring a high profit on the galactic market.

Human are born on earth and if you really think about the number of foods we can eat and contrast that against the number of lifeforms we cant eat you will notice that we can only consume a small number.

The chances that an alien lifeform could consume humans is very small.

Well to be fair.
We haven't even left our own front yard yet so who knows what's out there.

Maybe someday...

Good argument. We are heading to more engineered type proteins and foods. I would think an extremely advanced civilization would have equally sophisticated processed food they would find more appealing out of habit. Or, with their advanced technology they would genetically engineer other forms of getting nourishment not involving eating and pooping.

Well if they need to travel fast distances in space they would need to have a food supply.

Replicators?

Thousands of people worldwide disappear every year. Who’s to say we aren’t being harvested. May be a good question for David Pauline’s?

I betting that the odds of finding protein and chlorophyll in interstellar space are zero point zero.

You believe earth is the only planet with those compounds?

This was my thinking. You would think advanced technological extraterrestrials would have 3D printers for food.

I read a really good sci-fi anthology book by a Chinese writer recently and in one of the stories the dinosaurs come back to Earth and decide to harvest all the resources on the planet.
Their ambassador arrives 100 years before the rest of the fleet and calls a press conference, he says he’s here to decide if we live or die and when one of our leaders ask what he will be basing it on he says whether we taste good or not and proceeds to eat the ambassador, he tastes good.

Humans spend the next 100 years trying to convince the evolved Dino that we are worth keeping alive but he keeps pointing out how we are less than ants to his civilisation and that we basically have no say.
He asks if we would listen to cows or chickens if they had similar arguments.

After an unsuccessful attempt to destroy the alien mothership we are all taken aboard and the Earth is stripped down to its bedrock.
But it turns out the Dino’s are actually quite benevolent in that when aboard the ship which is several tomes the size of the Earth we are basically free to live our lives and we will have everything provided for us, no war, no disease, no need to work or do anything at all except live a carefree existence anyway we choose.
At the age of 60 we have a send off party with our family and friends and then head to a kind of processing plant where we are put to sleep and turned into food.

It ends with a dozen or so members of the human defence force standing on our barren planet with the Dino ambassador who has left a large patch of grass and an ant colony as the only living things left on the planet.
The humans decide to sacrifice themselves as ant food to give the ants a chance to propagate and repopulate the Earth.

It got me to thinking if this future would really be so bad?

It’s a really poignant story that I really haven’t done any justice for in this short summary

S&F for an interesting thread

I think people would still revolt against the send-off party. I guess the dinosaurs are not into veal. After 60 years you would think the meat would be tough and disgusting like many people's political beliefs at this age.

My thoughts are, if we are being (or will be when there's enough of us) harvested, its not as food in terms of our nutritional content. It would be for something in our brain chemistry, or it would be to use our brains themselves.

Imagine having the tech to fully tap into and fully harness the power of billions of quantum computers, all networked together. That's probably what I would do if I was a malevolent alien overlord with the tech and the means to do so!

Dude!!

Did you really have to bring politics into this thread?
Yes your political beliefs are disgusting but I was trying to put that aside.
Very disappointed

I’m taking back my flag

Edit: if you edit your post I’ll edit mine, no need to turn a pleasant thread into a poo slinging match

Look up the word "loosh"

The "others" are addicted to the negative emotions Humans produce in massive quantities in wars and events like garlic festival shootings.

Even if I did that isn't the point I'm making, reread my first post.
