The video shows boats surrounding the tanker followed by Iranian guards rappelling onto the deck from a helicopter just like their British counterparts did.

They do say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so I guess Iran were impressed by our boys in action.

It is my understanding from an interview with some British foreign affairs official (forgive me for not remembering his name), that military action is off the table.

While I'm sure you agree with that policy, do you think it might be better to not put that out publicly, if only for the sake of appearance?

No, I don't see military action on the table in this instance. Remember the 10 US sailors detained by the Iranian Navy? Eventually released unharmed and alive.

EDIT: If Iran was truly a horrible evil bogeyman, they would have murdered the 10 US sailors for absolutely no reason. In this instance, as well, they would have just killed all the crew and stolen the cargo/oil. The Islamic Republic of Iran is a sovereign nation, not a bunch of pirates or ragtag terrorists.

Iran is acting more unpredictable than normal lately. All these seizures do is make it more certain the West backs more sanctions against Iran.

Why attack if there is no loss of life nor property?
Iran backs down every time assets are nearby to enforce freedom of navigation of the Strait. I would expect some escorting of vessels there by an international flotilla soon.

Nice attempt.

Next comment surely "Iran/Persia etal. has not been an aggressive for 1000's of years" etc. Not to recognize Iran's current regime is less than 50 years old and fully an agressor.

No one will announce military reprisals , especially if imminent and spinning-up.

Wait, moon phase is 31st.

Oh please. Iran is being painted as something other
than it is. This is nothing new, just a little bit more serious than 2016's detention of the 10 US sailors.

There has only been one "seizure". The other is hardly a "seizure". The Libyan flagged vessel has already been released.

This is a little bit serious, but nothing to get the carriers out and send in F35s.

What exactly did the United States do in 2016 when 10 US sailors were detained?

Zilch, that's what.

No, they are still both independent of each other.

Me thinks it's time to take the hostage takers hostage on the tanker then ransom them back.

If this tit for tat continues. Sooner or later things are going to go south. All it takes is one itchy trigger finger be it sanctioned or not .

LOL, did you see the guy at the end who was sliding down the rope hit the person below him in the head

ETA - Watching it again I think they may have fallen, but it cuts away. It looks like the 3d to last slider has the rope shift on him at landing, the 2d to last slider is hanging off a ledge or something by the rope. It then looks like the last slider comes down on the head of the one hanging from the rope. Whatever happened it would not of looked good on this PR film.

Iran had to understand killing those men would have made their country into another Iraq type wasteland.

They can keep poking and one day they will slip up and lights out.

The Iranians aren't poking anything they are reacting to being poked.

You can't attempt to destroy a country's economy at not expect get some push back.
