That's one branch of thought on it, yes, but also fails to explain why Christ never returned and why we aren't now living in literal Heaven on Earth as promised at the end of it all. Those are always two problems with that line of thought.
It's funny really, we have nutters these days channeling aliens, angels, smurfs and who knows what, it's generally treated as the joke that it is.
