The School of Hard Knocks is Cheaper , and you Really do Learn a lot More.............

Military and tradeschools I always say, and on the job training in a field you are interested in is worth more than any degree IMHO

Medical professions are an exception

The military is an even bigger proponent of education than the general population. To the military, someone with a college education and literally 0 days of experience, fresh out of officer school is automatically superior to a career enlisted person that has been in for 20 years. And if you are educated, the top half of officer ranks are literally completely cut off to you unless you get a Masters. To be a general you need a doctorate. So I’m surprised that you both like the military’s way of doing things, and think that people shouldn’t be educated when the military literally bars everyone without a half decent education from even getting near any sort of decision making position.

The military considers the uneducated to be nothing more than cannon fodder. Bullet sponges for the people in the organization that actually matter, and nothing more.

I also noticed you left off several other professions. Do you want the people handling internet traffic to not understand cryptography sufficiently? That generally requires a PhD in mathematics. Do you not want your bridges built by people who have studied engineering?

Many fields cannot be done without an education, and even the ones that can be done without an education can be done better with one.

You’re not. You may but # happens. I just closed big deal. Tens of millions. Coal. I’d take 1 of those uneducated mfs over 100 guys like you into any arena. Big deal big money big implications big ROI for all involved. You’re not martyr far from it. In fact most pay back at interest on loans without taking food and and housing subsidies. Most start paying into system 15 years before you. You’re the freeloader here. Education does not result in net tax gain thus debt and loan bubble. Everything you say is # and amateur hour.

Why? Because they can swing a pickaxe and die young of black lung? Or because they can operate heavy machinery?

If they were educated, perhaps they could build you better mining machinery.

The fed has an interest in sending more people to college, or back to college.

It pads the unemployment numbers for the young, by removing them from the workforce until they aren't quite as young.

Seriously, the best predictor of lifetime wealth accumulation is the age at which you enter the workforce. Most people who enter the force at age 19 will out-earn their college-attending peers by hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I really don't see how this is possible. With nothing more than a high school diploma, you honestly aren't even qualified for a minimum wage job. You will never do something impactful with that level of education. You won't cure HIV or cancer, you won't send people to Mars (or goto Mars yourself), you will never solve an interesting problem the human race has, you won't even have the knowledge to run a business successfully unless you get lucky. All you will ever be able to do, is take orders from others... and maybe memorize enough of those orders, after being given them long enough, that you can repeat them to others.

There is a blog site called Professor Doom. He explains the student loan scam / money spigot very well. I too work in higher ed middle management, and all the things that are wrong with the system. The only thing the original rant missed is the fact there are very few full-time faculty teaching any more; it's all adjuncts who make #ty wages with no benefits

If higher education is dying, it can only be that lower education is failing. It's impossible to master higher order topics if the foundations are not mastered.

Exactly, which is tangentially related to why the democrats want to forgive student loans.

Dude you are actually delusional. You were 33 on food stamps and housing assistance because you were on college. You didn’t have a family. You didn’t have a job. You got your first job at age 34. You spent your birthday at the office on a Saturday then went home to nobody. That’s your life in nutshell. Why do you even talk you are a huge loser.

Aazadan you have no concept of how the mind develops or works. The end point you're talking about depends upon the development that takes place until you get to the point. How capable the adult mind is at rationalizing and functioning is one hundred percent based upon what you put into it during the developmental stages up until that point.

Yes different stages have different capabilities, but the adult stage isn't when you should start learning it's the final product of all the learning your brain does during the other stages. Yes you can learn after, but it's harder, especially if your years have not been spent molding your brain into a well adapted thinking power house, in fact a brain trained to learn will learn better than one not in adulthood.

It's during your development stages that your brain best shifts and alters, grows, creates pathways to different lines of thinking and problem solving. Your early youth is primarily communication and problem solving, but everything after that you're developing your reasoning and abilities that determine how well you will function as an adult.

You act like until people become an adult they are mentally handicapped. That's far from true, teenagers have been filling adult roles successfully for centuries. Through most of human existence, and even today, most people are living in the adult world well before the end stage of development.

Who we are as an adult is almost entirely dependent on how much effort is put into molding our mind into being ready and prepared for adulthood, and that cannot and will not be done by teaching mostly irrelevant crap while ignoring the actual skills that are clearly important as adults.

Our schools function to turn kids into incompetent zombies as adults, leaving them wholly unprepared for the world they are walking into. The classes that actually prepare you well for life, you need to go to college for, or pay for outside of school, which makes them electives.

Is why I'm considering homeschooling my kids if and when I have them. Not for religious reasons, I and my girlfriend are far from religious. We just don't want them going into adult hood indoctrinated into the bull# taught in school, and left wholly unprepared for being an adult like most people that go through the public school system are.

I had zero college when I entered the workforce. I worked my way from help desk (self taught imagine that), obtained a few certifications, ended up as a security engineer at a service provider. At that point I started my BS, finished that, obtained more certs, and entered a specialization in infosec. While working full time I started my MS in infosec, also obtained a few more certs. I now work for one of the foremost information security firms in the US, am paid an almost goofy salary, stock, benefits, you name it.

Not everyone takes the same path, one of my buddies has zero post high-school education, however has another 5+ years experience on me in the field. He also out-earns me by a good bit, with no formal education, he either self taught or learned on the job.

The only difference between the two of us, is with the credentials I have, there are a few more opportunities available to me as I get through the HR degree check which he wont. I've seen in my particular field this is more often the norm, up to SVP, partner, director, etc. level, where I out credential most of them on paper, yet they have the experience that I don't. Formal education is not a barrier in this extremely high tech field, so in my humble opinion based on what I've observed over a 15 year career, you're talking out of your rear.

So your argument to college being useless, is that you have more opportunity than your coworkers that didn’t go to college, and that you have a masters.

Being in a routine is important. That doesn’t mean you’re making any gains as a child though, you’re just building a habit.
