You can skip the contests and still submit stories.
I think of the contests as a way to expand membership and encourage creative writing; but mostly to reward Writer status.

The big thing used to be Collaborative Writing which required Writer status. Once I got writer I dashed over to collaborative writing, read up on one of the ongoing stories, put in a nice continuation. The next poster wrote something that basically ended the story. So I gave up Collaborative Writing.

ETA: Not that there's anything wrong with collaborative writing.
