A GUNMAN has opened fire in the central Dutch city of Utrecht killing at least one person and injuring a number of others, police said.
The gunman opened fire at around 10.45am local time.
Emergency services including armed police, anti-terror units and paramedic teams are on the scene.
Local authorities said air ambulances had been dispatched to support the emergency trauma teams but it casualty numbers have yet to be confirmed.
Eyewitnesses reported at least seven people had been injured in the shooting but there conditions are not yet known.
Multiple shots were fired in a tram in a Dutch city of Utrecht, leaving several people injured, police said. Emergency services and anti-terror teams have arrived at the scene.
A square around a tram station outside downtown Utrecht is on lockdown following the shooting, local media reported. Police have cordoned off the area and adjacent streets, but the perpetrator managed to escape.
Ambulances and emergency services are also present although the number of injured is yet to be clarified.

Dutch media has suggested there might have been multiple gunmen at a number of different locations across the city. Officers confirmed a manhunt was underway in the city. National co-ordinator for counter-terrorism and security Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg said a terrorist motive could not be ruled out.
