It is one of the better options and it is accessible. Closing that tunnel to Whittier would make it a good place to ride it out. The real issue would be access to game, but if you have a way to fish that solves that. I'd be more comfortable in a secluded location inland.

I get you, but remember I was raised in and spent most of my adult life before 30 in rural area's similar to yours. Small communities have their share of problem people that would choose to kill and steal rather than join in with the community. It is a way better scenario than a city though and I'd agree your chances are better.

It's just my personal take on it that I'd head as far away from anyone else that I could get. At least until the dust settled. Good neighbors become bad ones quickly when it's about survival.

In Idaho and part of Utah and Montana I know all the back roads quite well and yes that would be a plus. Here it's more about knowing the environment than the location. I'd stay south of Anchorage and get as far away from people as I could. Maybe over midway between Bethel and Anchorage. Wildlife is abundant and it's not as severe as up north. Getting there initially would be the elephant in the room.

Those people would be the first to go.

We all know out here who the potential problems are, and even without a SHTF emergency, they are ostracized and watched. Let an attack start, and they'll be the first to fall if they even show a hint of making trouble.

I'd think a small communities best bet would be something like the old forts with the agriculture being outside of it.

A WALL. A really, really, yuge wall! Forget a gated community, a fortress would be the ticket.

To answer the original post's question, I'd evacuate out of the cities of Venezuela and into the countryside as fast as feasible. Then exit through Columbia like most Venezuelans who flee are doing. I'd probably head for Mexico if I had marketable skills, since Columbia is being overwhelmed with refugees.

If a similar situation happened in the US (my current residence), I'd be in an enviable situation. I started prepping for the Y2K bug back in 1998k. To appease my in-laws, we only purchased things we'd used anyway "once I was proven to be an idiot." One thing that most ppl don't remember is there was fairly intense inflation leading into 2001; and the price of gasoline has never been as low in current dollars as it was on 12-31-1999. So We did ok.

We have continued "prepping," which is actually migrating toward greater self-sufficiency, ever since.

We have been working on become "gray" so that we blend into a crowd. You'd never notice us. Never remark upon us or think of us after we disappeared.

If there is a precipitous collapse in rural America, there will be a "night of the long knives" where society re-organizes itself, with a lot of the problem personalities being no longer a problem." It happened in middle America during the Great Depression. A lot of people were listed as "gone to California" who never arrived there....

I have been reading and watching a lot of stuff on Venezuela. It’s amazing that I wrote this almost a year ago and how I think we inch closer to this every day.

No I don’t think we will be exactly Venezuela, but I do think it gives us a preview of how things go down. Pay attention to Venezuela, it shows you what is truly valuable during a crash & hyperinflation. Most people think food, its not.
It is the currency to buy food, which is no longer standard currency. What I found interesting is that certain things have always stood the test of time as payment.

Gold & precious stones/metals
Booze
Sex (ie condoms etc...)
Survival gear
Entertainment - musical equipment
Seeds

Until factions of the US government decide to topple their own government instead of shooting their president I doubt Americans have much to be worried about.

ETA As for survival in such a situation, the city folk will find it very hard.
