The Love of My Life Has Passed Away

To my many friends here who have provided so much love, kindness, support, prayers and good thoughts over the years as my dear wife Dada has battled the ravages of Alzheimer's disease... My heartfelt thanks to you all.

Today, Friday January 11, 2019, her long struggle and her suffering came to an end. She passed away in her sleep just before 11 am our time.

I went in to visit her yesterday in the LDN (care center) where she'd been since she was transferred from the hospital a week earlier. The senior doctor in the LDN told me her condition was very poor and that she might not even last through the weekend. She went down so fast in the past few days. Last Saturday she was sitting up in bed and pretty happy, making eye contact with me and glad to have me there with her. But over the next few days her infections came back and hit her even harder than last time.

I visited Dada in her room and she was sleeping, so I kissed her and spoke softly to her. I told her I loved her, and even though she slept I believe that somewhere in her mind, she heard me.

Originally I'd planned to visit her again this afternoon, but the doctor called me around 11 am to tell me she'd just passed. Apparently she never woke up from that sleep.

So sorry friend. I found a note after mother passed for me to find:
"Don't think of me as "gone"...just "away" for awhile...for we will see each other again".

I type this with tears in my eyes Mike. We'd all been hoping for better news. Damn.

I don't really know what to say except you cared the best for her you could. I'm sorry for your loss and I wish you much strength in the coming time which will be hard. You are one of the sweetest and most caring people I have ever met online. I'm gonna go cry and swear in The Shed now. Please forgive me. Emotions are not my strongest skill in life.

So I'll just be presumptuous and say...

This is a great time to be weak. Yeah, I just said that. What I mean is that being "strong" when you hurt means being in denial.

Feel the pain as deeply as you can and embrace it now. That will make healing easier, though by no means easy, later.

Cry as much as you can, whenever you can. It's far better than the alternative.

There's a lot of stuff you'll have to deal with and can't put off no matter how much you may want to. Though some things can't wait, I recommend making that list as small as possible and cutting yourself as much slack as humanly possible. You deserve it.

We are not eternal, and you know all too well what can happen to our memories. Yet if there is anything in our lives that could be considered eternal, it is love.

Remember it. Cherish it. Carry it with you.

In the darkest of times, it can sustain you.

I believe that through Christ, we can live on after this earthly life. My prayers are for you that you be comforted and protected and healed, and reunited with Dada in the future. I believe we all will see each other again, so have hope and comfort in that.

And let in all the help that is offered to you during this heartbreaking time. Let others love and take care of you for a while.
