There are many private land owners who own land on both sides of the border. They do not want a wall in the middle of their property. There are many cases still in court where these landowners are suing the Federal government to keep the fences/walls from being built. The cases have been in the system since Clinton tried to build a wall. A wall across the entire border is not feasible or legally able to be built. The Democrats learned this lesson years ago. These same homeowners will leave Trump where they left Clinton, tied up in court forever, and the wall will not be built regardless if it gets funded or not.

Then build the wall up to their land and continue it on the otherside of their property. Either eventually they will beg for a wall or border patrol can patrol their property more alertly since the illegals will zero in on that opening and become a problem for the owners.

Edit add: for ranchers moving cattle...certainly gates in walls will be efficient and allow better surveillance.

It does not matter. The land that has not already been purchased for the fence will be seized if a National Emergency is declared in that area, and the landowner paid appropriately.

Sounds communist.

It is communist, except for the 'paid appropriately' part … so 'mostly' communist, but not entirely, yet.

Well, that was a pretty serious 'nothingburger' as the republican kids like to say. I wonder what the value was of the airtime that was used to make the same speech he made...what...yesterday?
I kinda hope that Trump's speech was a prologue for something dramatic, because if it wasn't...then it was just lame. Like in a sorryful, pathetic way.

Trump made it clear that ge wasnt backing down on his wall and then dems came on and said they arent backing down. So we just need to declare emergency and get it over with.

We'll hear "This is a strike fully supported by those furloughed" and "national security we are all doomed if this doesn't get funded" and so on. Election coming - campaign promise must be met, even if poorly thought out and scarcely supported, at least by anyone with a brain.

Because the Dems are being so stubborn and will not compromise one bit, this is a national emergency.

That's absolute baloney. So basically compromise means they MUST agree to wall funding, or it won't pass. Even though there was a vote of 100-0 on a bill to fund the government - wasn't good enough for Trump. This is SOLELY on him. So compromise apparently now means strong arming to get what you want.

If they cave, what happens next? How many more threats of shutdown if Trump doesn't get what he wants? People just don't understand his toddler mentality, I guess. If he has an angle, no matter how poorly planned, no matter who it hurts, if in the end, it makes him look good, he'll do it.

Before Trump was elected all the democrats were voting and agreeing that a wall was good.
Were they wrong? Or has the story changed because Trump wants it done? (Be careful now, facts are easily obtained about this).

It became quite clear after tonight's Address and rebuttal...

POTUS supports American citizens...

Chuck & Nancy support Pueblo Sin Fronteras... aka "People Without Borders"

Seems the general anti-Trump response here on ATS is that it wasn't entertaining enough.

Speaks volumes.

The nationwide speech was made to inform all Americans of why the President wants maximum security at the southern border. (Some people only watch broadcast TV and/or CNN, MSNBC.)

That maximum-reach speech was simply to set the stage for what is to come, should Chuck/Nancy tell President Trump tomorrow morning that their position on the border wall is unchanged, as long as he is President.

Very soon after they tell him this, President Trump will declare a National Emergency and proceed to have the Steel Wall built. Immediately after signing the declaration, he will sign the funding bill passed by the Senate in December, to reopen the government. No re-voting needed. (He might do the re-opening first, in order to get Fed Employees paid ASAP.)

The world is interested in the Trump presidency because its like a comedy show, we're all waiting to see what he'll do next to put orange, erm I mean egg, on his face and seeing his die hard support bend over backwards to make it seem deliberate or a good thing is funny. Don't get me wrong, we get some chuckles from the left and their Orange Man Bad rhetoric too. But yeah, the world is watching because it's kinda like "The Osborne's" only more far fetched and without the intimate cameras. "Trump This!" with cameras following his every move during his presidency would be the worlds biggest TV show, it'd be yuuuge...

Why is it always thrown around that people who oppose the wall want open borders??? Who on here (or anywhere) has even said they want open borders?

Somehow, and I'm not sure how, what is lost on a lot of Trumps wall people is that the people who oppose the wall are simply saying IT WON'T WORK!!!

If Trumps best idea is to build (and then indefinitely maintain) a multi-billion dollar wall that people can either just tunnel under, fly over or sail around...you can tell why he's been bankrupt so many times. It's a stupid idea but it's a catchy slogan.

And for those calling for him to say it's a National Emergency... come on.. it's not. It's a face saving strategy because he made such a song and dance about getting the wall/immigration/Mexico will definitely pay for it. If you truly want him to say it's a National Emergency fine, but when a President does that without the support of opposition, that opens up a precedent for a President using this to get their way whenever they want and that is what happens in a Dictatorship.

Very very VERY few people will ‘tunnel under’ the wall.
Tunnelling is not as simple or as safe as it sounds.

Certainly not as safe or as simple as ‘sneaking’ across open-land in the dead of night.

As for entry by sea and air, that’s also very very difficult. Do you really believe that massive boatloads of illegal immigrants will begin entering by sea if they encounter a wall?
Do you believe THOUSANDS will still come in, on planes?

The wall will literally stop thousands and thousands of border crossers every single year.

You know, like the lock on a bank door stops nighttime robberies. A bank robber could simply ‘tunnel under’, but they don’t.

Do you know how most illegal immigrants come to the USA? They fly in, nimrod. They fly in on legal visas and then they stay when those visas expire. And it's not at record levels. At all. Illegal immigration on the Southern border is not at record levels either. There is no crisis at the border. There's just a desperate bloviating liar in the Oval Office who can't get his border wall (have you even looked at the practicalities of it in places???) and who is bewailing that fact as he spouts yet more lies.

People who genuinely feel that a tall/deep wall, will not reduce the influx of illegals, drugs, trafficking, are not using their common-sense. (Or maybe have a mental impairment?)

As President Trump correctly stated tonight, Walls help protect those you love, by keeping criminals out.

Pelosi, Schumer, Obama, Clinton and other Trump-haters, not only have walls around their homes, they endorsed border wall funding before 2017.

“Nimrod”

I see, you’re obviously a leftist.

I know how most ‘illegals’ enter.

The wall will still stop THOUSANDS of border crossers every single year.
